Movie
Description
Jin Ishino is one of the primary child drivers of the Mobile Rescue Police, first appearing as the co-pilot of the Drive Head 03 White Hope alongside his twin sister, Mikoto Ishino. He is a ten-year-old boy with a gentle and sensitive nature, often appearing quiet and reserved, especially in contrast to his sister's more outgoing and blunt personality. Jin is highly intelligent, with a particular aptitude for mathematics, and his passion for animals and bug-catching are among his notable hobbies. Despite his many good qualities, he can be sensitive about his image; he dislikes when classmates call him cute, as he prefers to be seen as cool and capable.
Jin and Mikoto are deeply bonded, both driven by a desire to help others that was inspired by their parents, who are doctors working overseas. This desire to follow in their parents' footsteps is what motivated them to become drivers for the Mobile Rescue Police. Their shared intelligence means they often think on the same wavelength and have similar tastes, though their personalities remain distinct. Jin attends the same school as his fellow drivers, Gou Kurumada and Taiga Yagura, and counts them as close friends. A significant personal subplot for Jin is his crush on the masked idol singer Sala Manda, which begins after he rescues her during a storm and accidentally sees her unmasked face. He secretly collects her merchandise, and his feelings deepen during subsequent encounters where he protects her from a falling sign and uses his driving skills to help retrieve her lost mask before a concert.
Within the Mobile Rescue Police, Jin's role evolves alongside his development as a rescue worker. Initially, he and his sister share piloting duties for their Drive Head, swapping control via their individual Vipers. However, Jin initially struggles with mastering the Synchro Fusion technique, a key skill for piloting, which frustrates him and occasionally impacts his confidence. His first successful Synchro Fusion occurs during the storm rescue of Sala Manda, marking a turning point in his self-assurance. After their Drive Head is upgraded to the two-seater 03 Mk-II White Crystal Hope, Jin becomes the primary driver while Mikoto operates the specialized Cyber Eye Unit for search operations. In the subsequent web series, following Mikoto receiving her own Drive Head, Jin pilots the White Crystal Hope solo. His technical and strategic mind is frequently showcased, such as when he devises a plan to stop a rogue self-driving car or identifies critical structural weaknesses during a dam crisis. He also contributes ideas for new equipment, like the flight unit for the Brave Jet Fighter support vehicle.
Throughout the television series, web series, and subsequent movie, Jin's central journey is one of growing self-confidence. He evolves from a sensitive boy plagued by self-doubt into a more assured and decisive rescuer. His initial insecurity about being perceived as cute fades as he successfully executes high-stakes rescues and proves his strategic thinking in critical situations. While his core empathy and gentle nature remain, his experience as a driver enables him to develop leadership qualities and a stronger sense of his own capabilities. The core principle that he and the other child drivers were chosen for their pure hearts remains the foundation of his unwavering dedication to protecting others.
