Movie
Description
Gō Kurumada is a fifth-grade student at Takatomi Elementary School who serves as the primary driver of the Mobile Rescue Police's Drive Head 01 Sonic Interceptor, and later its upgraded successor, the Drive Head 01 Mk-II Cyclone Interceptor. He lives with his parents, Jou Kurumada and Kumiko Kurumada. His father works as the Chief Engineer for the Mobile Rescue Police, while his mother is not affiliated with the organization. His grandfather, Joutarou Kurumada, was a key contributor to the development of the Drive Head technology before his death, a legacy that continues to influence Gō's journey.
In terms of personality, Gō is characterized by enthusiasm, optimism, and a strong sense of justice. He is naturally friendly and maintains a belief in the inherent goodness of people, which makes him resilient in the face of setbacks. While he can sometimes be impulsive and a little reckless, his actions are consistently guided by a pure heart. A notable trait is his possession of a photographic memory, which allows him to rapidly analyze complex situations during rescue operations, although his high perception speed can occasionally cause synchronization issues with his teammates during Synchro Fusion maneuvers. Gō is required to keep his identity as a Drive Head driver a secret from his classmates, often using bathroom breaks as a pretext to rush off to emergencies, which naturally arouses the suspicion of his peers.
Gō's motivation to become a driver was not born from ambition but from an innate calling. After watching failed test runs of the Drive Head with adult pilots, he heard a strange sound emanating from the Drive Gear that no one else could perceive. During a fire at a chemical plant, he felt compelled to respond to this call and piloted the Sonic Interceptor for the first time. Thanks to his exceptionally pure heart, he achieved a 99.9% compatibility rate with the machine, successfully rescuing three trapped individuals and leading to his official recruitment by the Mobile Rescue Police. This event confirmed that only children with pure hearts could pilot the Drive Heads, validating his unique role in the organization.
Within the story, Gō serves as the central protagonist, leading emergency responses to a wide variety of disasters. His key missions include capturing robbers, stopping an out-of-control monorail, rescuing victims during a sinkhole collapse, and saving a dog named Axel, who later becomes the organization's pet. After the original Sonic Interceptor is severely damaged by the antagonist Dr. Karigari, Gō transitions to the upgraded Cyclone Interceptor, which is equipped with enhanced capabilities such as a laser blade. His role expands to include confronting an Evil AI, a sentient supercomputer known as Ark, which corrupts machines. In a confrontation at the Tower of Babel, he learns that the consciousness of his late grandfather, Joutarou, lives on as an AI within the robot Pit, a revelation that reaffirms his purpose as a driver.
His key relationships are a mix of camaraderie, rivalry, and personal conflict. He shares a friendly rivalry with fellow driver Taiga Yagura, whom he once rescued during a geothermal power plant disaster, an event that turned their initially distant relationship into a close friendship. He works collaboratively with the twin drivers Jin and Mikoto Ishino, becoming good friends with them right away. Outside of his rescue duties, his best friends are his classmates Hiroaki and Kenichi. A significant source of tension in his personal life involves his classmate Kasumi Haruno. Gō has a crush on her, but she initially treats him coldly. Unaware of his secret identity, she is a big fan of the Sonic Interceptor's driver, creating a situation where Gō wishes to reveal the truth but is strictly prohibited from doing so.
Throughout the series, Gō demonstrates significant development. He grows from an accidental pilot into a confident and capable leader, successfully handling increasingly complex threats such as self-driving car rampages, weather-manipulation devices, and copies of the original Drive Heads created by the Evil AI. His relationships mature, particularly his ability to work in sync with teammates who initially struggled to match his fast perception speed. In later web series continuations, he collaborates with Shun Kuroeda of the Mobile Assault Police to defeat rogue vehicles and neutralize electromagnetic disturbances, showing his ability to work cross-functionally outside his immediate team. His notable abilities, beyond his photographic memory and pure heart, lie in his unique connection to the Drive Gear technology and his high-speed analytical thinking during rescue operations. Physically, he is recognized by his spiked blue hair and teal eyes, and he typically wears a red shirt with a blue vest, swapping the vest for a blue driver's jacket with a golden "DH" badge when responding to emergencies.
