Description
Gaito Kurouzu is a central character in the Future Card Buddyfight anime series, first appearing as one of the main protagonists in Future Card Buddyfight Triple D and continuing his role into Future Card Buddyfight X: All-Star Fight. He is a sixth-grade student at Aibo Academy and the father of Light Kurouzu, though this familial connection is established later in the series timeline.
Gaito is a boy with purple eyes and shoulder-length purple hair, standing 135 centimeters tall. His birthday is July 9. He fights using a Darkness Dragon World deck, partnered with his buddy, the Black Death Dragon Abygale. Their bond was forged under unusual circumstances: shortly before the events of Triple D, Gaito traveled to the Darkness Dragon World and discovered Abygale critically injured after a battle with the powerful entity Azi Dahaka. Gaito brought the dragon to safety, and the two discovered their shared need to become the strongest, forming a buddy pact that would define both their lives.
Gaito's personality is defined by a rough, antisocial exterior that often pushes others away. He treats people coldly, even when individuals like Gao Mikado or the creature Bal approach him with善意 and good intentions. This behavior stems from deeper issues: Gaito does not deal well with social situations or crowds and tends to hide from them, and he has a pronounced fear of cats known as ailurophobia. He takes Buddyfighting with extreme seriousness and has zero tolerance for those who use dirty tactics or mistreat cards. Despite his harsh demeanor, Gaito is frequently misunderstood. He operates as a renegade, battling higher-class fighters who steal cards and returning those cards to the children from whom they were taken, revealing a protective streak beneath his grim reaper-like facade.
Gaito's primary motivation is proving himself as the strongest fighter, a goal he pursues with an almost obsessive intensity. Before the start of the series, he had never lost a Buddyfight since becoming Abygale's partner, leading him to believe that winning was his destiny. This belief drives his ambition to become the World Buddyfight Champion. However, his motivations are not purely selfish; his actions against card hunters show a hidden sense of justice, particularly toward younger students at Aibo Academy who cannot defend themselves. Later in the series, his focus shifts to obtaining the Dragon Force, an ultimate power rumored to reside on the island where the Japan Qualifiers for the World Buddyfight Championship are held. He believes this power will allow him to become the strongest.
In the story, Gaito initially appears as a mysterious figure that Gao Mikado and his friends mistake for a card hunter. This misunderstanding is resolved when they discover he is actually retrieving stolen cards. His rivalry with Gao begins in earnest during the WBC Cup, where Gao becomes the first person to defeat Gaito in a Buddyfight. The loss shatters Gaito's belief in his own invincibility, causing him to break down emotionally and punish himself harshly. In Future Card Buddyfight X: All-Star Fight, Gaito is chosen as the representative for Darkness Dragon World in the World Buddy Masters tournament, where he faces powerful opponents like Dai Kaido and Kanata Ozora.
Gaito's key relationships drive much of his character development. His bond with Abygale is the most significant, evolving from a partnership based solely on mutual ambition to a genuine friendship after Gaito learns to appreciate his buddy rather than viewing him as a tool for victory. His relationship with Gao Mikado oscillates between rivalry and grudging admiration, with Gao's kindness and insistence on helping others slowly breaking through Gaito's cold exterior. After Gao helps Gaito reunite with Abygale following a separation, Gaito experiences a change of heart, becoming more helpful and friendly toward Gao and his friends. His tensions with fellow fighter Tasuku Ryuenji eventually thaw, leading to a hard-earned alliance where they train together and even participate in a two-on-one Buddyfight against Kyoya Gaen. Gaito also maintains connections to Kyoya Gaen, a shrewd benefactor who strategically cultivates Gaito and Abygale's potential.
Gaito undergoes significant development throughout the series. His journey is defined by learning to accept vulnerability and the value of connections with others. The first major turning point is his loss to Gao, which forces him to confront that his belief in an undefeated destiny was an illusion. Later, his pursuit of the Dragon Force reveals his emotional immaturity: when he finally obtains it after his 100th match, he orders Abygale to attack an opponent mercilessly. When Abygale refuses, Gaito declares that his buddy does not deserve to partner with him, causing the Dragon Force to abandon him because his heart was not open. Witnessing Gao and Tasuku successfully harness their own Dragon Forces deepens his frustration, leading him to throw a tantrum and break down. However, he eventually learns that sadness is born from a weak heart, a realization that triggers his own Dragon Force to awaken properly. He apologizes to Abygale and expresses gratitude for their partnership, marking a significant shift from viewing strength as domination to understanding it as connection. By the conclusion of his story arc, Gaito decides to accompany Gao and the others to Los Angeles, signaling his full integration into the group and his acceptance of collaborative bonds over solitary strength.
As a fighter, Gaito commands notable abilities centered on his Darkness Dragon World deck. His tactics focus on dismantling opponents strategies through calculated deck destruction and harnessing the power of cards in the drop zone to fuel devastating assaults, often executed with his signature weapon, the Death Dragon Sickle. Early in Triple D, his key Impact Monster is Vanishing Death Hole, which he later upgrades to a second Impact Monster representing Abygale's new power, Unlimited Death Drain. By the time of Buddyfight X, his deck evolves to include the Set Impact Death Count Requiem, designed to automatically win after the opponents third turn, making him the first character in the anime to use an instant win card. He also utilizes Overturn, a transformation mechanic that enhances his buddy Abygale's abilities. After obtaining and properly attuning to his Dragon Force, this power evolves into the Style of Retaliation, further enhancing his capabilities in battle. His fighting style remains adaptable, as he reintegrates cards from his earlier decks when facing threats to his primary strategies.
