Description
Kanata Oozora is a sixth-grade student at Aibo Academy. He is known throughout the Buddyfight community by the moniker of the No-Damage Fighter, a title earned for his seemingly impossible streak of winning every match he ever participated in without losing a single life point. His appearance is that of an average-sized boy with distinctive turquoise hair that fades to white tips and sharp dark blue eyes. In casual settings, he typically wears a white shirt under a short-sleeved white and blue jacket, paired with blue trousers and red sneakers. During official Buddyfights, he adopts the look of a soccer player, donning a light blue jersey and white shorts, which reflects his other great passion for the sport. When he performs an impact, his body manifests the power of his buddy monster: crystals cover his legs and feet, and a snowflake-shaped birthmark appears on his left cheek.
On the surface, Kanata projects an image of a young genius who excels perfectly at everything he attempts, including academics, athletics, and Buddyfighting. He is often seen smiling and appears cheerful, but this exterior masks a profound sense of loneliness and sadness. His perfection creates a significant internal conflict; by winning so effortlessly, especially without ever taking damage, he robbed himself of the joy of achieving a hard-fought victory. This dominance also isolated him from peers and left him without a clear goal or future perspective. Feeling that there was no one who could truly challenge him, he lost his motivation and quit Buddyfighting for a period to focus solely on soccer. His best friend and the one being with whom he shares his deepest emotional connection is his buddy monster, Quintessence Crystal Dragon Athora.
Kanata is initially introduced as a reluctant prodigy. When approached by Tasuku Ryuenji, the original Star Dragon World representative for the World Buddy Masters tournament, to take his place, Kanata refuses due to his retired status and lack of interest. His competitive spirit is reignited only after two key encounters. First, the ever-energetic Gao Mikado managed to defeat him in a penalty challenge, a non-Buddyfight competition that piqued his interest. Second, a deciding Buddyfight against Tasuku, which Kanata wins without taking any damage, reminded him of the thrill of battle. He accepts the role of Star Dragon World representative, re-entering the world he had abandoned. Throughout the tournament, his legend continues as he easily defeats opponents like Togari Togeyama, Shosetsu Kirisame, and Dai Kaido. He even manages to overcome the instant-win tactic of Gaito Kurouzu’s Death Count Requiem using a protective spell called Asterism.
The defining moment of his story occurs in the grand finale against Gao Mikado. For the first time in his life, Kanata is pushed to his limits. Gao and his buddy, Batzz, shatter Kanata's defensive strategy, destroy Athora, and inflict damage, ending his historic no-damage streak. Instead of being upset, Kanata is visibly excited and glad, finally experiencing the tension and challenge he had been missing. He mounts a massive comeback but ultimately accepts his first-ever loss. This defeat does not crush him; it liberates him, teaching him the value of struggle and what disappointment feels like for the first time.
Following the tournament, his character continues to develop through new conflicts. He is approached by the antagonist Wisdom with an offer to join him, which Kanata refuses, leading to a decisive loss that fuels his drive to improve. A major subplot involves his past with Keisetsu of the Sword Arts. A flashback reveals that Kanata had effortlessly defeated Keisetsu in a shop tournament years prior, a loss that caused Keisetsu to quit Buddyfighting. Ironically, the guilt or emptiness from this easy victory was a contributing factor to Kanata’s own decision to quit the game. When they face each other again in the present, Keisetsu defeats Kanata. With encouragement from Gao and his friends, Kanata regains his confidence and eventually defeats Keisetsu in a rematch using a new powerful technique, symbolizing his growth from a lonely genius to a fighter who values the emotional connections and rivalries the game provides. During a training camp, he also receives advice from Guru Bunbuku, which helps him strengthen his bond and tactical synergy with Athora.
In battle, Kanata is a strategic master whose abilities are intrinsically linked to his Star Dragon World Prism Dragon deck. His early, unbeatable strategy centered on his buddy, Athora, who possessed abilities that could completely prevent all damage to Kanata. This allowed him to execute powerful finishing impacts even during an opponent’s turn. However, this strategy had vulnerabilities against multiple attacks or specific counter cards. Later, Athora evolves into Heavenly Crystal Dragon Aldo Athora, adapting a new ability called Overturn. This technique redirects all incoming attacks to Aldo Athora for a full turn, making the dragon immortal for that duration and dealing one point of damage back to the opponent for each attack it receives. His deck evolved to support this strategy by focusing on accumulating gauge and hand cards using monsters like Brush Upper and White Crystal Dragon Rizzling. His most notable offensive finisher became an impact called Direct Dynamic Diamond Overhead, which he used in crucial victories against Keisetsu and the powerful Sakate Onigashira. From a solitary, untouchable No-Damage Fighter, Kanata Oozora grows into a passionate duelist who finds true fulfillment not in winning easily, but in overcoming worthy challenges alongside his partner, Athora.
