Description
Maron Yanagiwara, called Maron-chan, is the Chief Engineer of the destroyer Harekaze. A Chiba Prefecture native, she considers herself a true Tokyoite, embracing local dialects and customs such as a love for palanquins and festivals. Her mechanical aptitude stems from childhood repairs on her grandfather's fishing boat, giving her deep knowledge of ship engines. She enrolled at Yokosuka Girls' Marine High School after learning her best friend Hiromi Kuroki planned to attend.
Maron requires attention and chafes at solitude. She becomes easily frustrated, especially when the Harekaze's temperamental engine is pushed beyond safe limits during prolonged combat, though she acknowledges performance demands are necessary for crew survival. Her dedication manifests in treating the engine like her own child, maintaining it meticulously. She voices irritation when Captain Akeno Misaki orders maximum speed but complies, understanding operational needs.
Her friendship with Hiromi Kuroki is central, though Maron feels neglected when Kuroki focuses heavily on Deputy Captain Mashiro Munetani. Following repairs after the battle with the Admiral Graf Spee, Maron organized an Equator Festival to mark crossing the equator. Initial low enthusiasm discouraged her until Hime Wazumi's palanquin project revived participation. During the festival, Maron reconciled with Kuroki, expressing fears of losing their friendship due to Kuroki's attention toward Mashiro and gratitude for Kuroki's past support.
When the Harekaze sank after delivering its crew safely to Yokosuka, Maron tried to reboard to save it, requiring Kuroki to restrain her. The Harekaze's equipment was later transferred to its sister ship Okikaze, renamed Harekaze at Akeno's request. Maron then joined an operation against a pirate-controlled seafort aboard the new Harekaze, which sustained moderate damage.
Daily routines include fishing. She favors barbecue over sashimi. Academically strong in mathematics, she struggles with English. Her personal motto is "Love thy neighbor."
