Description
Kissshot Acerolaorion Heartunderblade emerged into royalty as Princess Laura, or Rola, in an unspecified foreign kingdom roughly 600 years ago. Her extraordinary looks earned her the title "Princess Beauty," yet she grew profoundly unhappy, valued solely for her appearance. Seeking change, she met an elderly witch who cast a spell to reveal her inner beauty. This act proved disastrous: her radiant inner beauty drove all who witnessed it to suicide, offering their lives or most prized possessions to her. The resulting wave of deaths annihilated her entire kingdom, including her parents. Before perishing, the witch urged her to travel alone to prevent further tragedy. Adopting the name Acerola, she wandered until encountering the pureblood vampire Deathtopia Virtuoso Suicide-Master at Corpse Castle. Deathtopia sought to consume her but found himself captivated by her inner beauty, instead transforming her into a vampire. He granted her immense power, immortality, and bestowed her full vampire name: "Kissshot" referenced fairy-tale princes healing cursed princesses with a kiss; "Acerola-Orion" combined her journey name with the hunter constellation; "Heart-Under-Blade" reflected Deathtopia's view of her strength like a blade and underlying kindness. This name later inspired the kanji for "Shinobu" (忍), formed by "heart" (心) under "blade" (刃).
As a vampire, Kissshot traversed the world for centuries, eventually reaching Japan where she learned archaic Japanese. There, she created her first thrall, Seishirou Shishirui. Centuries later, weakened by starvation in Japan, she was attacked and dismembered by three vampire hunters—Dramaturgy, Episode, and Guillotinecutter—who sought her heart and limbs. Near death, she encountered the human Koyomi Araragi. He offered his blood, turning him into her vampire servant and forging their master-servant bond. Araragi reclaimed her stolen limbs, restoring her power. Realizing her survival required killing humans, she manipulated Araragi into a confrontation, intending to die by his hand so he could return to humanity. When Araragi refused to kill her, specialist Meme Oshino intervened, leading to a resolution where Kissshot lost nearly all her powers and regressed physically and mentally into an eight-year-old child. Oshino gave her the human name Shinobu Oshino.
In this weakened form, Shinobu initially remained mute and withdrawn, residing with Oshino in an abandoned cram school. After reconciling with Araragi, she regained her voice, adopting a haughty, archaic speech pattern. She moved into Araragi's shadow, forming a psychic and physical link where they shared senses and emotions. Her appearance fluctuated based on blood intake: her primary form was a blonde, golden-eyed child often seen in a white or colorful dress with sandals; consuming more blood allowed temporary aging into an adolescent (sporting a ponytail and modern clothing like hoodies and skirts) or her true adult form—a voluptuous woman in a signature red-and-black dress with opera gloves and heels. She developed an obsession with Mister Donut's Golden Chocolate donuts, employing negotiations or blackmail to obtain them. Despite her outward arrogance, she concealed deep emotional fragility stemming from centuries of isolation. Her bond with Araragi became central, with both pledging to die together. She displayed possessiveness and jealousy over his interactions with other girls, particularly Nadeko Sengoku, and feared abandonment when her former thrall Seishirou reappeared, though she ultimately chose to remain with Araragi.
In an alternate timeline where Araragi died fighting "Black Hanekawa," Shinobu, blaming herself, unleashed a rage-fueled rampage, creating jiangshi to destroy the world. Witnessing Araragi alive in this timeline caused her to weep tears of blood, reinforcing their codependent bond. Over time, she gradually adapted to human society, using modern devices like video game consoles and occasionally employing contemporary slang, contrasting her usual archaic speech. She was eventually adopted by Araragi and his wife Hitagi Senjougahara after their marriage.
