Description
Kanade Amamiya is a seventeen-year-old high school student who becomes the central figure in the idol world of Dream Festival!. He was born on July 15th, making his zodiac sign Cancer, has type O blood, and stands 177 centimeters tall. With fair skin, neck-length auburn hair that he often wears up in a messy ponytail, and amber eyes, his appearance is both energetic and approachable.
Before his idol career begins, Kanade leads a relatively listless life. He quit the soccer team at his middle school, Yokokita Middle School, after blaming himself for the team's loss in their final game, an event that left him feeling responsible and drained of passion. Following this, he spends much of his time working a part-time job without a clear sense of purpose or direction. His life changes unexpectedly when he is scouted by the legendary idol Haruto Mikami, who is impressed by something special in Kanade’s demeanor. Initially unsure about the offer, Kanade finds himself drawn into the competitive and demanding world of the talent agency D-Four Production.
Personality-wise, Kanade is characterized by a cheerful and enthusiastic nature. He is known for his kindness and finds genuine joy in making others smile, a trait that becomes one of his greatest strengths as an idol. While he can be stubborn and has a mild temper, his default disposition is one of positivity and excitement. Interestingly, before being scouted, he showed a side lacking in passion, but the world of idols reawakens his drive. On stage, he is described as special because he performs best not by following strict instructions, but by simply being himself, with his natural smile and energy resonating deeply with audiences.
Kanade’s primary motivation throughout the series is to discover a new passion and purpose. After feeling defeated by his experience in soccer, becoming an idol offers him a second chance to dedicate himself fully to something and to succeed as part of a team. He is driven to work hard, not only for his own debut but to connect with his fellow rookies and form a strong unit capable of winning the agency’s major competition, the Dream Festival, which would allow them to make a professional CD debut.
In the story, Kanade serves as the protagonist, starting as a complete novice surrounded by other rookies with different levels of experience. He is initially placed in a unit called Traffic Signal with Shin Oikawa and Junya Sasaki before becoming a core member of the main group, DearDream, which also includes Chizuru Sawamura and Itsuki Katagiri. His role often involves mediating and bringing his unit members together, proposing the expansion from a trio to a quintet after a difficult loss to strengthen their group.
His key relationships are central to his development. With Junya Sasaki, he has a competitive and contentious start, as Junya openly challenges his worth and questions his abilities. They share a similar stubborn streak, and this rivalry pushes Kanade to improve. With Shin Oikawa, the dynamic is initially one-sided, as Shin is taciturn and seems to care nothing for Kanade. However, Kanade persists in trying to befriend him, and they eventually become close friends after Kanade takes responsibility for a mistake. He is also noticed by the popular idol Yuzuru Sawamura, who takes a serious liking to Kanade, adding another layer to his journey.
Throughout the series, Kanade undergoes significant development. He transforms from a bored, passionless high schooler who quit soccer in guilt into a dedicated and passionate idol. His natural ability to cheer others up and his stubborn refusal to give up help him overcome his initial inexperience and self-doubt. He learns to channel his authentic self into his performances, realizing that his genuine smile and energy are his greatest assets. He also matures as a leader and team player, moving from someone who struggled to keep up with rigorous training schedules to a driving force behind his group’s formation and success.
Kanade possesses several notable abilities. His most prominent talent is an almost supernatural ability to easily remember and recall a person's face, a skill that serves him well in connecting with fans and colleagues. On stage, his innate ability to act naturally and let his personality shine is considered a special quality that sets him apart from idols who rely solely on technique. Beyond his idol activities, he enjoys playing smartphone games and soccer, and his favorite brand of performance costumes is Peace Parade. He also has a specific fear of lightning and a strong dislike for the taste of paprika.
