Tanjiro Kamado, the eldest son of a charcoal-selling family, lived with his mother and siblings in the mountains. His father, Tanjuro, died of illness before the main events. Returning home one day, he found his family slaughtered by a demon, with only his younger sister Nezuko surviving, though transformed into a demon. This tragedy set him on a path to become a Demon Slayer, seeking vengeance for his family and a cure for Nezuko.
He has ruffled black hair with burgundy tips and wide, dark red eyes with white pupils. A childhood burn scar on his forehead evolved into a flame-like Demon Slayer Mark after intense battles. He wears a checkered black-and-green haori over his Demon Slayer Corps uniform and carries hanafuda earrings depicting a rising sun over a mountain, inherited from his father.
Kind, gentle, and driven by a strong sense of justice, he shows deep empathy even toward demons. He is determined, resilient, and fiercely protective of Nezuko. Through battles and loss, he develops a stricter approach toward evil demons but retains his core compassion. He possesses an exceptional sense of smell, which he uses to detect enemy weaknesses, and is known for his physical toughness and powerful headbutts.
Trained by former Demon Slayer Sakonji Urokodaki, he mastered Water Breathing—a fluid and precise swordsmanship style. He later discovers his heritage includes the Hinokami Kagura, the original Sun Breathing style, which is more powerful but physically taxing. His black Nichirin blade turns crimson red in combat, hindering demon regeneration.
His journey involves constant battles against demons, especially the Twelve Kizuki, to gather blood samples for Tamayo’s research to cure Nezuko. Key conflicts occur on the Mugen Train, in the Entertainment District, and at the Swordsmith Village. He forms strong bonds with fellow Demon Slayers Zenitsu Agatsuma and Inosuke Hashibira. His relationship with the elite Hashira evolves from skepticism to mutual respect, particularly with Giyu Tomioka and Kyojuro Rengoku.
During the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, he suffers severe injuries, losing his right eye and left arm. In a desperate move, Muzan turns him into a demon. As a demon, he regenerates his wounds, gains enhanced abilities, and develops new markings, but becomes feral and attacks indiscriminately—except toward Nezuko. He is eventually restored to human form through collective effort, though permanently blinded in his right eye and with a withered, immobile left arm.
After Muzan’s defeat and the dissolution of the Demon Slayer Corps, he returns to a peaceful life. He marries Kanao Tsuyuri, and his descendants, including Sumihiko Kamado, live in a modern era free from the threat of demons.
