Description
Professor Sycamore (Dr. Platane in Japanese) is the Pokémon Professor of the Kalos region, operating from Lumiose City. His primary research focuses intensely on Pokémon evolution, specifically the mechanics, triggers, and implications of Mega Evolution. He investigates the crucial role of the Trainer-Pokémon bond in unlocking the latent power within Mega Stones, theorizing that Mega Evolution serves as a test of this connection. Professor Sycamore acknowledges unresolved mysteries surrounding the phenomenon, including why the Mega-Evolved state persists only during battle, why Pokémon types or abilities sometimes alter, and whether the power could burden the Pokémon.
He mentors and sponsors Alain, providing him with a Charmander and entrusting him with a mission to traverse Kalos collecting Mega Stones and data on Mega Evolution, requiring regular reports. Professor Sycamore supports Alain's goal of defeating all Mega-Evolved Pokémon to explore the phenomenon's limits and implications. He contemplates Mega Evolution's broader impact on both Pokémon and humans, driven by a desire to solve its enigmas. Their connection is significant, with Alain recalling Sycamore's theories during his journey.
Fulfilling the traditional regional Professor role, he provides new Kalos Trainers with starter Pokémon—Chespin, Fennekin, or Froakie—and distributes Pokédexes. He also gifts certain Trainers a Kanto first partner Pokémon (Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle) along with the corresponding Mega Stone for its final evolved form. He directs Trainers to Gurkinn in Shalour City for deeper understanding of Mega Evolution and later upgrades a Trainer's Mega Ring to detect hidden Mega Stones after specific events.
Professor Sycamore maintains professional relationships with key Kalos figures. He is acquainted with Elite Four member Siebold and Champion Diantha, discussing Mega Evolution's bond connection with the latter. He also had a prior association with Lysandre, leader of Team Flare. Learning of Lysandre's true role and the ultimate weapon's activation fills Sycamore with significant regret and disappointment. He actively works to thwart Team Flare, dispatching assistants Dexio and Sina to investigate Lysandre Labs and directing Trainers to use the Anistar Sundial to locate necessary counter-threat Mega Stones. He later formally apologizes for failing to prevent Lysandre's actions.
His expertise extends beyond Mega Evolution. He is credited with discovering the Zygarde Cube and collaborates with researchers like Fennel. After Team Flare's defeat, he organizes a Lumiose City parade honoring the Trainers who stopped the organization, presenting them with the Honor of Kalos.
