Description
Chokichi, son of a construction crew foreman, navigates the narrative with his social standing and behavior deeply shaped by this family position. Neighborhood peers consistently identify him through his father’s community role, dubbing him "the Boss’s son."

As leader of the "Back Street Gang," Chokichi displays a persistently antagonistic and aggressive nature, directing this hostility especially toward Shōta, who commands the rival "Main Street Gang." His characterization underscores callousness, hot-headedness, and ill-mannered conduct. He actively seeks confrontations, instigating conflicts within the local children’s group dynamics, including plotting ambushes against Shōta and his supporters, fueled by his combative personality.

A pivotal moment unfolds during the Senzoku Shrine summer festival. Chokichi attempts to ambush Shōta, but Shōta’s absence triggers Chokichi’s frustration. This erupts into violence against Sangorō, a member of Shōta’s group whose family lives in a house owned by Chokichi’s father. This housing arrangement creates a power imbalance, frequently dragging Sangorō into Chokichi’s conflicts. In the same altercation, Chokichi strikes Shōta’s best friend, Midori, on the forehead with his muddy sandal. Later, he unleashes a torrent of insults at Midori, targeting her family background and her anticipated future as a courtesan. This verbal assault significantly fuels her emotional distress and influences her subsequent choices.

The story frames Chokichi’s trajectory within the broader societal pressures confronting the youth in this setting. Like his peers, he faces expectations tied directly to his family’s profession, steering him toward inheriting his father’s role. This societal context constricts his perceived avenues for personal growth, reinforcing the narrative theme of predetermined social roles within the community.
