TV-Series
Description
Ayano Sugiura is a supporting character who serves as the vice president of the student council at Nanamori Middle School. She is a second-year student, fourteen years old, and stands at 159 centimeters tall, making her one of the taller girls in her grade, though she remains slightly shorter than her classmate Yui Funami. Ayano has long, maroon-colored hair that is almost always tied up in a characteristic ponytail, with bangs covering most of her forehead and two longer locks framing the sides of her face, and she has purple or red eyes.
At first glance, Ayano presents herself as a serious and hardworking student who takes her responsibilities as vice president very seriously. She is diligent with her studies and consistently achieves high marks, a point of pride for her. This studious nature fuels a strong sense of rivalry with her classmate Kyoko Toshino, who effortlessly scores at the top of exams without seeming to study, much to Ayano's frustration and dismay.
However, this competitive front masks a much softer and more vulnerable interior. Ayano is secretly in love with Kyoko, a fact she struggles to admit to herself and others. Her personality is best described as tsundere, meaning she often acts hostile or competitive toward the object of her affection to hide her true feelings of embarrassment and shyness. When around Kyoko, she becomes flustered and flustered, often bursting into a room shouting Kyoko's full name, Toshino Kyoko, as an exclamation. Despite her attempts to appear aloof and treat Kyoko as a rival, she constantly finds excuses to visit the Amusement Club room simply for a chance to be near her.
Ayano's role in the story is primarily as a counterpart to the Amusement Club, often interacting with them through her duties on the student council or through her personal connection to Kyoko. She is frequently seen alongside her best friend and fellow student council member, Chitose Ikeda. Chitose is Ayano's closest confidante, having first approached her when she was sitting alone and shy in their first year of middle school. Their friendship is deep and supportive, with Ayano often turning to Chitose for advice, particularly regarding her complicated feelings for Kyoko. Chitose, in turn, is known to have frequent romantic fantasies about Ayano and Kyoko together.
Over the course of the series, and notably by the third season, Ayano begins to show signs of personal development. She gradually gains more confidence and becomes slightly more honest with herself about her romantic feelings, though expressing them directly remains a significant challenge. Her key relationships are defined by this internal conflict. Her interactions with Kyoko are a mix of arguments, competitions, and shy moments of genuine connection. With her classmate Yui Funami, she shares a calmer dynamic, and it is Yui who most appreciates Ayano's unique sense of humor.
A notable and endearing ability of Ayano is her tendency to create puns by pairing common Japanese phrases with the names of famous world landmarks. For example, she might replace the word for penalty, bakkin, with Buckingham, or express worry, mon mon, with Mont Saint-Michel. While her classmates often find these puns odd, Yui consistently finds them hilarious. Beyond this verbal quirk, Ayano's primary abilities lie in her academic diligence and her capability as a student council officer, efficiently managing the council's duties in the frequent absence of the president, Rise Matsumoto.
