TV-Series
Description
Himawari Furutani is a supporting character in the Yuruyuri series, including the OVA Yuruyuri Nachuyachumi!+. She is a first-year middle school student and a member of the student council at Nanamori Middle School.
In terms of appearance, Himawari is a young girl of average height with a noticeably developed figure for her age. She has medium-length azure blue hair, which she typically styles into two small pigtails at the front, and she often wears a headband. Her eyes are gold in color.
Her personality is generally mature, delicate, and lady-like. She speaks in a consistently formal and polite manner, presenting herself as helpful and well-mannered. However, this composed demeanor changes drastically when she is around her childhood friend and neighbor, Sakurako Oomuro. In Sakurako's presence, Himawari becomes bitter, easily irritated, and mistrusting, frequently resorting to berating her with sharp words and even physical violence, such as hard kicks. Despite this constant bickering, she shows genuine care and concern for Sakurako, often helping her with homework and spending a great deal of time with her. Their relationship was much closer during their childhood, a time when Sakurako's older sister once arranged a make-believe wedding for them.
Himawari's motivations often revolve around maintaining her dignified image and managing her relationship with Sakurako. She is very concerned with her body image, particularly her weight and the size of her chest, which she is self-conscious about. This leads to actions such as attempting a strict diet upon believing she has gained weight. She is also motivated to be a good student and a responsible older sister to her younger sibling, Kaede.
In the story of Yuruyuri Nachuyachumi!+, which focuses on the end of summer vacation, Himawari participates in group activities with both the Amusement Club and the student council. She joins the camping trip featured in the main OVA and is present for subsequent summer activities like a sleepover, where her typical dynamic with Sakurako continues to be a source of comedy.
Her key relationships are central to her character. Her bond with Sakurako is a primary focus of her role in the series. While they constantly argue and Himawari frequently expresses annoyance, it is clear they share a deep history and an underlying closeness, with Himawari often acting as the responsible one. She is also a caring older sister to Kaede, whom she looks after and cooks for. Outside of Sakurako, she maintains friendly and cooperative relationships with other members of the student council, such as Ayano Sugiura and Chitose Ikeda, as well as the members of the Amusement Club, including Yui Funami and Chinatsu Yoshikawa.
While Himawari does not undergo a dramatic personality shift, her dynamic with Sakurako serves as a consistent source of development in their understanding of each other. Their constant friction is balanced by moments that reaffirm their friendship, showing that their bond has evolved from childhood innocence to a more complex, teasing, but still caring relationship in their adolescence. She is shown to be academically diligent and a good student, contrasting with Sakurako who is less so. She is not athletic and worries about her performance in physical education tests, though extreme provocation from Sakurako can momentarily trigger a surprising surge of physical strength. Himawari is also skilled in domestic areas; she knows how to knit and is a proficient cook.
