Description
Sui Kaburagi, a third-generation Fafner pilot from Tatsumiyajima, operates the Fafner Mark Sechs Kai nicknamed Amaterasu. He has dark blond hair that gradually lengthens to obscure his brown eyes, and wears the standard Alvis pilot uniform on duty. Off-duty attire includes a yellow shirt with a white jacket or a white short-sleeved shirt paired with grey pants and orange-white shoes.
Calm and decisive in combat, Sui possesses intelligence rivaling Soushi Minashiro, positioning him as Siegfried System successor during events in Soukyuu no Fafner The Beyond. Family trauma fractures his composure: his sister Sanae perished in the First Plan L, fueling conflicts with parents Mitsuru and Kanae Kaburagi. One confrontation culminates in Kanae slapping Sui, though they reconcile when he expresses his resolve to move forward, sharing tears and healing familial bonds. This culminates in launching a Tanabata lantern for Sanae.
Sui develops unspoken affection for co-pilot Rina Nishio, flustering during encounters like interrupting her at her family shop. Their combat synergy through shared SDPs evolves into co-piloting the Zero Fafner during the Fourth Operation Azure. After Rina enters a three-year coma in The Beyond, Sui visits her consistently. He teleports her to safety moments before her Fafner Izanami explodes during the Fifth Operation Azure. Post-awakening, their tearful reunion and Rina’s use of his first name confirm their romantic relationship.
His combat initiation occurs in Exodus during Festum-interrupted training, where he places Sanae’s hair in a charm—triggering the slap from Kanae before reconciliation. In The Beyond, he joins the Fifth Operation Azure to rescue Soushi Minashiro and Esperanto children, later operating the Siegfried System against rogue Mark Nicht units and Festum incursions. Duties include activating Troopers/Mind Block systems, relaying battlefield updates, and commanding retreats.
Selected for the decoy-based Second Plan L at Wadatsumijima, Sui bids farewell to his parents. Piloting Amaterasu, he defends the L-Boat against Festum, attempting allied Fafner extraction via SDP despite interference until reinforcements secure their return. Post-mission, he attends meetings exposing the island’s tracking vulnerability linked to Rina.
Kanae’s abandoned Second Plan L proposal—based on sensing Sanae’s call—and Sui’s rejection of past fixation further heal family wounds, restoring routines like shared meals.
