Hoopa Unbound originates from the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa. In ancient times, this powerful form resided in Dahara City, using its interdimensional rings to grant wishes in exchange for adoration and sustenance, fueling the city's prosperity. Intoxicated by its power, it began summoning Legendary Pokémon for destructive battles, causing significant damage. This prompted a hero named Ghris from Arche Valley to seal Hoopa's overwhelming power within the Prison Bottle. This sealing reduced Hoopa to a smaller, confined form and separated its power, which festered with rage and darkness during a century of imprisonment within the bottle.
Physically, Hoopa Unbound manifests as a large, genie-like entity with purplish-gray skin, six arms, and a muscular build. It features a prominent ring embedded in its chest, spiky red hair in a ponytail, and horns adorned with golden rings. Its eyes glow red, and it possesses a tail ending in a spike. Standing 6.5 meters tall and weighing 490 kilograms, this form contrasts sharply with Hoopa's confined state. Transformation is facilitated by the Prison Bottle, temporarily restoring full power, altering its typing from Psychic/Ghost to Psychic/Dark, and amplifying its abilities.
Hoopa Unbound manipulates space through golden rings, serving as portals for instantaneous teleportation of objects, people, or Pokémon across dimensions. It can summon multiple Legendary Pokémon simultaneously, commanding them in battle. This power includes creating "Hyperspace Hole," a move bypassing conventional defenses. However, excessive use risks destabilizing spacetime, potentially creating destructive rifts.
When the Prison Bottle reopened a century later, Hoopa's sealed power escaped as a sentient shadow entity embodying pure malice and resentment. This manifestation seeks to forcibly merge with or eliminate the confined Hoopa to reclaim dominance. It displays immense aggression, summoning and controlling six Legendary Pokémon—Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, and Kyurem—to assault Dahara City and its inhabitants. Its motivation stems from bitterness over imprisonment, viewing the confined Hoopa as a fragment to be eradicated.
The climax occurs as Hoopa Unbound possesses Ash Ketchum after a new Prison Bottle is forged. During the confrontation, the confined Hoopa shares memories of positive experiences with Ghris's descendants, Baraz and Meray, illustrating familial bonds and redemption. These memories pacify the enraged entity, allowing reconciliation. The two forms merge back into a unified Hoopa, free from anger and capable of controlling its full power without corruption. This reintegrated Hoopa Unbound then aids in halting a spacetime rift caused by the earlier battles, with assistance from Arceus, before departing to rebuild Dahara City.
