Description
Tomohiro Nagatsuka is a high school student pivotal in Shoya Ishida's life after years of Ishida's isolation. He has a chubby physique, dark green curly hair, and frequently wears a yellow jumper over a white shirt with a red undershirt, often accessorized with a scarf. He later grows a mustache as a gesture of goodwill for Ishida.

Nagatsuka first meets Ishida when Ishida intervenes to prevent Nagatsuka's bike theft, offering his mother's bike instead. Though Ishida initially regrets the loss, Nagatsuka retrieves the beaten but intact bike after an extensive search, earning Ishida's trust. This makes Nagatsuka Ishida's first friend in six years and the first to lose the symbolic "X" Ishida used to mark others as untrustworthy. Nagatsuka enthusiastically declares them best friends, nicknaming Ishida "Yaeko" – coincidentally sharing the name of Shoko Nishimiya's mother.

Personality-wise, Nagatsuka shows unwavering loyalty and kindness, especially towards Ishida, coupled with possessiveness and jealousy towards males befriending Ishida due to fear of replacement. His enthusiasm often manifests as frantic or pushy behavior others find off-putting. These traits stem from past rejection over his appearance, leading him to fabricate stories about his social life. Despite this, he demonstrates self-awareness about his flaws and strives to prioritize his positive qualities. He is ambitious and persistent, particularly about filmmaking, driving him to recruit Ishida and others for an amateur film contest.

His relationships are multifaceted:
* **With Ishida:** He actively facilitates reconciliation between Ishida and Shoko Nishimiya, defending Ishida against Shoko's sister Yuzuru's initial distrust. He leverages the film project to strengthen their bond. Their friendship faces tensions, including a physical fight resolved through mutual growth.
* **With Shoko:** He considers her a friend primarily through Ishida. After Ishida's coma, he comforts her in the hospital and supports her wish to continue their film, fostering an independent bond.
* **With Naoka Ueno:** Their relationship is strained after he mistakes her confession note to Ishida as intended for him. Her vitriolic rejection causes him visible fear, though hostilities lessen by the series' end.
* **With Yuzuru:** They share a teasing dynamic after initial hostility, often humorously antagonizing each other.
* **With Satoshi Mashiba:** Early jealousy over Mashiba's friendship with Ishida evolves into camaraderie, evidenced by Nagatsuka giving him a nickname.

Nagatsuka's role extends beyond comic relief. His question to Ishida – "What does it mean to be friends?" – prompts Ishida to reflect on connections transcending logic. Nagatsuka's persistence in maintaining friendships helps rebuild Ishida's social world, culminating in group activities like the amusement park visit where Ishida questions deserving such joy. During the film project, he unites Ishida, Shoko, and their peers, despite conflicts. After Ishida's suicide attempt and coma, Nagatsuka remains emotionally invested, reinforcing his loyalty.
