Description
Yōichi Takatō, alias Hell's Puppeteer, initially surfaced as the timid, bespectacled manager of the illusionist troupe "Illusionary Magician," masking his true nature. His mother's death, world-famous magician Reiko Chikamiya, prompted him to investigate her apparent accident, revealing that troupe magicians conspired to kill her and steal magic routines she created for him. This discovery ignited his transformation into a vengeful orchestrator of murder plots.

Adopting the alias Mario Totsune, he infiltrated the troupe and executed a complex revenge scheme as Hell's Puppeteer, eliminating multiple targets. High school detective Hajime Kindaichi ultimately uncovered the plot, leading to Takatō's arrest and imprisonment. He later escaped custody, vanishing before resurfacing as a "criminal artist," designing intricate murder plots for others seeking revenge or justice. He manipulated these individuals as "puppets," eliminating accomplices who made errors during the crimes.

Takatō grew up in England under a strict adoptive father involved in trading, who concealed Takatō's maternal lineage. Only while intoxicated did the father reveal Takatō had a half-sister. Following his adoptive father's death when Takatō was 17, he pursued magic training in Italy. His unnamed, wealthy biological father, possessing multiple mansions and suspected criminal ties, profoundly influenced Takatō's belief in his "fated" involvement in crime.

He employed numerous disguises across cases: Hidenari Obuchizawa (Reika Hayami Kidnapping Murder Case), Scarlet Roses (Russian Dolls Murder Case), Maskman (Ghost Hotel Murder Case), Ichiyo Akao (Jail Gate Cram School Murder Case), Kimon Kurouri (Black Magic Murder Case), Yoji Toyama (Rose Cross Mansion Murder Case), and Nanao Mizuki (Antlion Trench Murder Case). In the Rosenkreuz Mansion case, he temporarily allied with Kindaichi to solve murders, agreeing to surrender afterward—a promise he broke.

His relationships were complex. He viewed Kindaichi as his "evil twin," their dynamic like parallel lines. He maintained a connection with Kengo Akechi, a fan of his mother who attended the same high school, Shuo High. During his time at Shuo High, depicted in the "Young Takato Case File," he joined the magic club after returning from England; a murder incident during this period solidified his sense of criminal destiny. He later discovered his half-sister, Giselle Tsukuyomi, seeing her as key to understanding his origins. Temporary collaborator Raimu Yuzuki received uncharacteristic respect; he closed her eyes after her death in the Russian Dolls Murder Case.

Physically, Takatō possessed a thin, light build with distinctive slanting eyes and a characteristic malicious smile. His personality blended cold-hearted calculation with a warped artistic sense, viewing murder plots as masterpieces. He demonstrated exceptional observation, analytical thinking, and knowledge of criminal psychology, consistently staying ahead of investigators. Despite empathy for individuals like his sister, his actions remained manipulative and destructive.
