OVA
Description
Norah Arendt, also called Nora, is a young shepherdess from Ruvinheigen. She has blonde hair, dark brown eyes, and an "honorably impoverished" look marked by naivety and servility. Her constant companion is the loyal sheepdog Enek.
Orphaned early with no relatives, she spent much of her childhood in a Church convent annex that also served as an almshouse. Becoming homeless after a swindler took the almshouse's land, she soon found a wounded Enek carrying a shepherd's staff. This discovery led her to learn shepherding and regain employment under the Church. However, her exceptional skill drew suspicion of witchcraft from Church authorities. Her status shifted from charitable support to surveillance, and her supervising priest assigned her hazardous tasks like guiding flocks into dangerous areas to test her. Seeking independence, she offered wolf-deterrent services to travelers near Ruvinheigen, though with limited success.
Her personality blends considerable inner courage, resiliency, compassion, initial loneliness, and a strong work ethic. Early portrayals show her as focused and solitary, largely due to her reliance on Enek. Encounters with Kraft Lawrence and Holo spurred her development, revealing a more independent and brave side, especially in crises. Later, during the OVA "Wolf and Amber Melancholy," she becomes notably more talkative.
Her involvement in the plot starts with a chance meeting with Lawrence and Holo on the St. Metrogius pilgrimage road, where she provides a traditional shepherd's blessing. This leads to her critical role in a gold smuggling scheme. She executes her duties flawlessly despite mortal danger, securing Lawrence's freedom from debt and her own financial emancipation from the Church. Afterwards, she and Enek leave for Kuskov to start anew.
Her key relationships define her: Enek remains her most loyal companion and closest friend, reciprocating her deep trust. Lawrence becomes her most trusted friend and primary motivator; she grows very fond of him, later developing a crush. Holo initially dislikes her intensely due to negative shepherd experiences. Though tensions linger, collaboration during the gold smuggling fosters friendlier interactions. After Norah aids Holo during an illness, their relationship improves into a tentative friendship, though Holo maintains rivalry and jealousy over Lawrence's affections. Norah becomes one of the few fully aware of Holo's non-human identity.
Her skills extend beyond guiding and protecting flocks to include customary traveler greetings and blessings. She recites an ancient shepherd's invocation for divine and spiritual protection. A practical habit was going barefoot outside towns to preserve her shoes, a practice she stopped after Lawrence provided durable sandals.
Her character development shows a transition from a marginalized, surveilled shepherdess to self-emancipation. Initial timidity evolves into assertiveness during crises, and her social interactions broaden from solitude to active engagement. Her arc resolves as she leaves Ruvinheigen with resources and confidence for a new life, symbolizing hard-won autonomy and future hope.
