Description
Balder, once a revered Lumen Sage, faced exile upon defying sacred laws through his forbidden bond with Umbra Witch Rosa, which bore their daughter Cereza—later known as Bayonetta. This union shattered the fragile equilibrium between their factions, igniting the catastrophic Clan Wars that decimated both clans. Branded a catalyst for the ensuing Witch Hunts, Balder endured as the last Lumen Sage, his legacy distorted by history as a power-hungry instigator rather than a man bound by love.

Five hundred years later, he reemerged as CEO of the Ithavoll Group and prophet of the Ragna faith, preaching the resurrection of the Creator deity Jubileus. The anime reimagined his descent: consumed by grief after Rosa’s death and the dissolution of his family, he spiraled into madness, envisioning universal rebirth through Jubileus’ return. His intricate schemes targeted Bayonetta’s dormant Left Eye of Darkness, intending to unite their Eyes of the World and rewrite existence.

Balder artfully entangled Jeanne, Bayonetta’s once-loyal comrade, as a willing accomplice rather than a pawn. He drew Bayonetta to Vigrid, exploiting her younger self Cereza to reignite her memories and unleash her Left Eye. In the final reckoning, he merged with Jubileus’ statue, striving to collapse the Trinity of Realities into his dominion. His downfall arrived as Bayonetta, aided by Jeanne and echoes of Rosa’s dying wish to “save” him, obliterated the deity using infernal summons and her mother’s lipstick—a poignant defiance of his warped ideals.

The anime frames him as a figure fractured by loss, his devotion to family curdling into a desperate crusade to obliterate a world that robbed him of both. Even in their climactic battle, fragments of his paternal self surfaced as he called Bayonetta “my dear, sweet child,” a fleeting echo of love beneath his fanaticism. This intimate tragedy diverges from game canon, where the entity Loptr’s corruption steered his actions, positioning the film’s narrative as a self-contained exploration of internal decay over external manipulation.

His visage mirrored his duality: celestial white-and-gold robes, a peacock-feathered mantle denoting authority, and a golden mask obscuring his left face—a testament to splintered identity. Though capable of channeling searing light, telekinesis, and angelic legions, the anime prioritized his role as a calculating puppeteer over direct combat, aligning with his shadowed orchestration of fate.
