Description
Shinjurou Yuuki originated as an unnamed orphan raised by multiple caretakers who ingrained in him a powerful compulsion to assist others. This drive shaped his early adulthood spent as a camera operator in conflict zones, where he screened films for impoverished communities to foster hope. Financial exhaustion from this endeavor forced him to sell film reels at flea markets. During this time, he encountered the volunteer group "Singing on the Battlefield" and agreed to chauffeur them through dangerous territories using his vehicle.
A pivotal incident occurred when his group entered an active combat area. Their vehicle crashed during an assault, and Shinjurou suffered a fatal neck wound from a stone stake. His blood awakened Inga, a nearby sealed supernatural entity. Inga possessed his body, healing his injury but using him as a vessel to consume the souls of his companions. Through this forced possession, Inga extracted their concealed truths via lethal interrogation while Shinjurou observed powerlessly. Among the victims, Yuuko Kurata committed suicide to protect her secret, leading Inga to inhabit her corpse and establish a permanent connection to her form.
After reclaiming his body, Shinjurou confronted Inga. He negotiated a binding pact: Inga would abstain from killing and instead employ her power to extract truths without ending lives. In exchange, Shinjurou vowed to supply "souls" by uncovering truths through detective work, formalizing their partnership. Concurrently, he was framed for murder due to the group's deaths. To evade prosecution and public linkage to the crimes, he discarded his original identity. Prosecutor Izumi Koyama provided the alias "Shinjuro Yuuki," which became his permanent official name.
The trauma of possession and his companions' deaths profoundly influenced his character, breeding cynicism and survivor’s guilt alongside an unwavering dedication to exposing truth in a society that manipulates information. This contrasted sharply with figures like Rinroku Kaishou, who controlled public narratives through state-sanctioned deception. Shinjurou’s methodology fused deductive reasoning with Inga’s supernatural ability to compel one truthful answer per person. Their dynamic matured into a symbiotic partnership focused on solving cases, though his history often manifested in a brooding, stoic demeanor.
