Description
Kyōsuke Kishi, an oni yōkai residing in Sakurashinmachi, serves as assistant to Mayor Hime Yarizakura. He and his younger sister Touka originated in Okayama, born from humanity's collective thoughts and beliefs perpetuating oni legends, rather than biological means.
Discovered in Okayama's forests by Hime and Juli, Kyōsuke fled to protect Touka but unintentionally injured her during the pursuit. Hime persuaded them to relocate to Sakurashinmachi, where they lived with her and her grandmother. Akina Hiizumi became one of Kyōsuke's earliest friends due to his lack of fear toward Kyōsuke's oni nature.
Standing 177 centimeters tall with black hair and gray or blue eyes, Kyōsuke typically wears rectangular glasses. These became necessary after a head injury sustained while shielding Touka from Kotoha Isone during an incident where Kotoha lost control of her abilities. Though Kyōsuke claims pre-existing vision deterioration, associates suspect the injury directly caused his impairment. His standard attire is formal work clothing: a white dress shirt, black tie, suit jacket, and trousers. Accessing his full oni power manifests two horns and orange markings around his eyes in anime depictions.
Kyōsuke's personality blends intense professionalism with deep familial loyalty. He embodies Bushido virtues like duty and self-control, maintaining formal speech and strict ethical standards at work. Yet he exhibits significant protectiveness toward Touka, often prioritizing her safety—a trait prompting Akina to label him a "siscon," leading to frequent teasing and conflict. Kyōsuke struggles to detach from future threat anxieties, hindering relaxation. He displays occasional quirks: verbal fluster when confused, mild intoxication from cola, enjoyment of reading, and a preference for beef bowls.
His relationship with Akina Hiizumi is complex. While acknowledging their long friendship, Kyōsuke initially criticizes Akina's capabilities as oyakume, believing Akina's perceived failures contribute to yōkai suffering. He also disapproves of Touka's romantic interest in Akina. Despite friction, their bond evolves as Akina demonstrates competence. As Hime's assistant, Kyōsuke switches between formal address ("My Lady") during duties and casual interaction ("Hime") during breaks, reflecting both respect and personal connection.
Kyōsuke possesses inherent oni superhuman strength. A bracelet-like seal on his left wrist suppresses this power via placebo effect, relying on his belief in its efficacy. Removing the seal unleashes his full strength and triggers horn growth, an ability used primarily for rescue operations and city protection.
A key past event involves Kotoha Isone. During her uncontrolled "falling" episode, Kyōsuke intervened to protect Touka, resulting in his head injury and vision impairment. Though Touka initially resented Kotoha, Kyōsuke absolved her of blame, facilitating their eventual reconciliation.
His career choice reflects devotion to duty. Despite Hime's suggestion he attend college, Kyōsuke insisted on becoming her assistant, viewing the role as essential to safeguarding the community he values.
