Description
Shuu Rei Fuan, also known as Kento Rei Faun, hails from a wealthy family in Yokohama's Chinatown. His ancestors immigrated from China during the Qing Dynasty, establishing a prosperous clan led by an elder known as Grandfather. As the eldest of five siblings—Rinfi, Yun, Meiryu, and Chunfa—expectations to yield to his younger brothers and sisters led him to pilfer food, perceiving scarcity. His father, Chanrun, runs a successful Chinese restaurant chain, while his mother, a martial arts master, trained him in kung fu from childhood. This upbringing fostered deep loyalty and a strong sense of justice despite their affluence.
Physically, he stands approximately 5'7" in later appearances, possessing blue-black hair and grey-blue eyes. His personality blends a hot temper, stubbornness, and impulsiveness with profound loyalty and protectiveness. He frequently charges into confrontations without strategy, a flaw adversaries like Dais, Warlord of Illusion, exploit to manipulate him into attacking allies. He exhibits extraordinary physical strength even without his armor, capable of feats like stopping speeding vehicles. His interests include a voracious appetite—often consuming ten hamburgers before breakfast—alongside judo, kung fu, rugby, arm wrestling, mountain climbing, and Tai Chi Gen. He dislikes konjac (devil's tongue) and edible bird's nest.
As the bearer of the Hardrock (Kongo) armor embodying the virtue of Justice (Gi), he draws power from the Earth element. The orange armor, accented with brown and white, originates from the "Throne of the Gods" in northern mountain shrines. His primary weapon is the three-section staff (Kongo Tsue), functioning as nunchaku or naginata and excelling in offense and defense. His ultimate technique, Iron Rock Crusher (Gantessai), concentrates terrestrial energy to create seismic disruptions capable of destroying structures. In the OVA "Message," he acquires redesigned armor resembling a military commander's jinbaori, though its specific abilities remain undefined.
His narrative spans all media throughout the conflict against Talpa (Arago). Key events include his initial awakening alongside fellow warriors in Tokyo; imprisonment and power drainage by Talpa to forge a weapon; pivotal roles in raids on the Dynasty; and participation in Talpa's defeat using the Inferno Armor. Post-war storylines show him winning a lottery to fund Ryo's birthday, pursuing Sage to America in "Gaiden," and confronting Sage's corrupted Halo armor in New York. In "Legend of the Inferno Armor," he surfs and later investigates Africa with the group. During these arcs, he demonstrates growth by moderating his impulsiveness after endangering allies, though strategic thinking remains challenging.
In "Message," he and the warriors confront Suzunagi, a spirit questioning the purpose of their armors and past battles, forcing introspection on humanity's right to wield power. While sealed within new armor alongside others, his personal resolution to Suzunagi's philosophical challenges—specifically regarding the meaning of armor and warfare—is not detailed, with the narrative emphasizing collective despair and sealing.
Relationships define his character: he shares a close bond with Cye Mori, often training or rooming together, and considers Rowen Hashiba a childhood friend after meeting at Rowen's grandfather's shrine. He acts protectively toward the child Ully and maintains familial responsibility toward his siblings. His dynamic with Ryo balances camaraderie with competitive friction.
