Description
Amaterasu-ōmikami is not the primary subject in "The Everyday Tales of a Cat God." The central divine figure is Mayu, a cat goddess banished from the heavenly realm, Takama-ga-hara, for her gambling habits. Stripped of her divine powers, she lives in exile on Earth within the antique shop Yaoyorozudou, managed by the human Yuzu Komiya.

Mayu displays distinctly feline traits, favoring relaxation, sleep, and seafood. Easily distracted by video games, she maintains a generally carefree and lazy demeanor. Nevertheless, she demonstrates genuine concern for her friends and community, occasionally revealing competence in her divine duties when situations demand intervention. Her primary ability involves locating lost objects using a magical scroll.

Her background involves familial ties impacting her exile, notably an arranged engagement to another cat goddess, Sasana Shōsōin. Their fathers arranged this without considering compatibility or Sasana's gender. Sasana harbors deep affection for Mayu, addressing her respectfully and expressing eagerness for their marriage. Mayu also attracts Meiko, granddaughter of the god Daikokuten, who wields a magical golden hammer that generates gold coins. Meiko competes with Sasana for Mayu's affection, their rivalry stemming from childhood when Mayu invited the then-friendless Meiko into her playgroup.

Throughout the series, Mayu interacts with diverse deities and supernatural entities. These include Yoshino, a minor cherry blossom goddess prone to clumsiness; Gonta, a fox god with romantic feelings for Yuzu; and Shamo, a poverty god who arrives to audit local deities but becomes a recurring companion after deeming them capable despite their chaos. Mayu's involvement typically centers on resolving supernatural problems affecting her town or assisting acquaintances. Examples include helping Yoshino recover misplaced magical ash essential for seasonal cherry blossoms, collaborating to thwart Shamo's poverty-inducing inspection, and aiding an onmyoji in retrieving rebellious shikigami assistants.

Her personal history intersects with Yuzu's when the ghost of Yuzu's deceased cat, Kotetsu, implored Mayu to alleviate Yuzu's grief, leading to their cohabitation. While Mayu's laziness and teasing nature sometimes frustrate Yuzu, mutual care underpins their relationship. Additional episodic adventures involve beach outings disrupted by typhoon gods, comedic ghost story sessions, and confrontations with opportunistic antique dealers, blending the mundane and mystical aspects of Mayu's earthly existence.
