Description
Popura Taneshima, nicknamed "Poplar" or "The Chiclet-Sized Chief," is a 17-year-old high school student working at the Wagnaria family restaurant. Her name reflects her parents' hope for height, but she remains notably short at approximately 1.4 meters (4'7") early on, increasing slightly to 1.41 meters (4'7") later. This stature causes frequent cases of mistaken identity, with others often thinking she's an elementary or middle school student, a source of significant frustration. She measures her height almost daily and uses elevator shoes to appear taller, a secret coworker Hiroomi Souma later exploits to coerce her into tasks. While studying, she wears fake glasses to look older and more serious.
Her personality is predominantly cheerful and bubbly, a bubbly peacemaker who desires harmony among coworkers. She exhibits moments of obliviousness, particularly regarding Jun Satou's romantic feelings for Yachiyo Todoroki, though she surprisingly recognizes Yachiyo's affection for Satou before Yachiyo herself does. Deeply sensitive about her height, she reacts strongly to teasing or comments about it, often puffing her cheeks in indignation or declaring her actual age when mistaken for a child. She forms close friendships, particularly with Mahiru Inami, whom she supports in overcoming androphobia, and actively tries to push Inami and Souta Takanashi together. She highly admires Souta’s family, especially his mother and sisters, for their height and figures, viewing them as divinely blessed after initially idolizing Souta’s cross-dressing persona, "Kotori," whom she considered the epitome of feminine beauty.
Her coworker relationships are complex. She views Souta Takanashi, a year younger, with high regard but consistently mispronounces his surname as "Katanashi." Despite his frequent comments about her small size frustrating her, they maintain a friendly rapport. Jun Satou, a chef, is a close friend who often assists her but also teases her relentlessly about her height and messes with her hair, especially when frustrated by his unrequited feelings for Yachiyo. Yachiyo Todoroki and manager Kyouko Shirafuji are protective figures; Yachiyo frequently defends her against height-related insults, while Kyouko routinely intervenes to shield her from bullies among the customers. She has a somewhat fearful relationship with Hiroomi Souma due to his knowledge of her elevator shoes and attempts to act as an older sister figure to Aoi Yamada, though Yamada subtly looks down on her.
Her father is a public servant and her mother a housewife, both shorter than her. She attends the same high school as Souta Takanashi. Originally conceived as the series protagonist, the focus later shifted to Souta. Across the series, Popura shows significant development. Initially defined by height insecurity, she gradually gains confidence in her role at Wagnaria. By the finale, she achieves a slight height increase and is appointed Chief of Staff for the part-time employees, succeeding Yachiyo Todoroki when Yachiyo steps down to pursue other opportunities alongside Jun Satou. This promotion signifies her growing competence and acceptance of responsibilities, marking a departure from her earlier anxieties.
