Konzen Douji is the heavenly predecessor of Genjo Sanzo, living 500 years prior. As nephew to Kanzeon Bosatsu, he held a lofty position within the celestial bureaucracy yet suffered profound boredom from monotonous document review duties. His initial aristocratic detachment manifested as curtness, impatience, and a near-total absence of joy, embodying the traits of an inexperienced "young master" with a short temper and fastidious, almost obsessive-compulsive nature—fixated on perfectly aligned document stamps and immaculate surroundings.
His existence fundamentally shifted with the arrival of Goku, a golden-eyed boy born from a stone below and brought to Heaven by Kanzeon Bosatsu. Initially resistant and irritated by caring for this "heretical being," Konzen gradually developed deep paternal affection, naming the child Goku. Despite frequent outward exasperation, he revealed underlying gentleness and protectiveness. This bond became the catalyst for Konzen's emotional growth, challenging his apathy and sense of superiority. He began seeking value beyond his duties, striving to live up to Goku's idealized view of him as a warm, guiding sun.
His social circle expanded through interactions with Tenpou Gensui, Field Marshal of the Western Army (an old acquaintance), and Kenren Taisho, a General under Tenpou. Their influence, combined with Goku's presence, eroded Konzen's isolation and arrogance. He moved beyond his "lukewarm existence," engaging more with the world. Witnessing Kenren's unjust torture spurred him to investigate Heaven's corruption. Through Tenpou, he learned of deep-rooted schemes by figures like Li Touten, who sought power by manipulating his son Nataku and viewed Goku as a threat.
The pivotal crisis erupted when Goku overheard Li Touten's plans and confronted Nataku. Witnessing Nataku's suicide triggered Goku's transformation into the uncontrollable Seiten Taisei, who rampaged destructively. Despite fearing this unleashed power, Konzen physically intervened to stop Kanzeon Bosatsu from executing Goku, even striking his aunt. He vowed to protect Goku, acknowledging it was the boy, not himself, who embodied the true radiance of the sun—a complete break from Heaven's authority.
Declared enemies of Heaven for protecting Goku, Konzen, Kenren, and Tenpou resolved to flee to the lower world with the boy, taking the Dragon King of the Western Ocean, Gojun, hostage to escape. During their desperate flight from pursuing forces, Konzen made the ultimate sacrifice. Ensuring Goku reached the lower world safely, he shielded the boy, taking a fatal blow meant for him. With his dying words, he promised Goku they would meet again, next time with Konzen (in his next incarnation) reaching out first—a promise fulfilled centuries later when Genjo Sanzo freed Goku from Mount Gogyou.
Physically, Konzen possessed distinctive long, fine golden hair often tied in a low ponytail, violet eyes with long lashes, and an androgynously beautiful appearance frequently remarked upon in Heaven. He dressed in fine white robes (depicted as purple in some anime adaptations) featuring details like a three-orbed necklace, black under-armor with gold trim, heeled sandals, and gloves reminiscent of Genjo Sanzo's attire, highlighting their connection. His legacy remains intrinsically tied to his profound bond with Goku, his courageous defiance against a corrupt Heaven, and his sacrificial act paving the way for his future incarnation's role.
