General Kenren served as a General in Heaven's Western Army First Unit, commanded by Field Marshal Tenpou. This sixteen-member unit operated under the motto "We will fight together until the end," known for their independent spirit and close bonds. Kenren previously held rank in the Eastern Army but faced demotion and transfer after sleeping with a superior officer's wife and assaulting the officer. His heavenly reputation painted him as unruly and lawless, lacking self-control with alcohol and women—evident by the sake jar perpetually tied to his belt. Yet beneath this demeanor lay sharp tactical acumen and formidable combat prowess, rumored to exceed even the War Prince Nataku’s strength. Many in Heaven’s upper ranks underestimated his laid-back attitude, though he retained fierce loyalty and popularity among subordinates.
Kenren cultivated a deep friendship with Tenpou, sharing mutual distrust of Heaven’s authorities. They deliberately courted scandals, jokingly referring to themselves as married—partly to mask covert investigations into military corruption, but mostly for amusement. Kenren often assisted Tenpou with practical tasks, like cleaning his perpetually disordered study, reflecting a dynamic where Kenren acted as a supportive "housewife" figure. His personality blended irreverence and chivalry; he openly disrespected authority, relished chaos, and shielded those he deemed vulnerable. This included taking Son Goku under his wing shortly after Goku’s arrival in Heaven. Kenren protected the boy from hostile servants by claiming Goku was his illegitimate son, insisting Goku call him "Ken-niichan" (Ken-big brother). He also demonstrated concern for Nataku, objecting to the war prince’s deployment while injured—an act of defiance that led to Kenren’s imprisonment.
When Goku’s limiter broke, unleashing his destructive Seiten Taisei form and triggering a massacre, Kenren and Tenpou defended both Goku and Konzen Douji against Heaven’s forces. Declared traitors, they took the Dragon King of the West Sea, Gojun, hostage to negotiate safe passage, demanding exile to the lower world as their surrender term. Anticipating betrayal, Kenren fortified Tenpou’s study and collaborated on an escape plan. During their flight, Enrai’s forces surrounded them, prompting the First Unit to intervene against orders. Kenren and Tenpou urged their men to stand down, having resigned their commissions, but the unit insisted on acting independently. Tenpou issued a final command to eliminate all witnesses from the Second Unit. Acknowledging this as their final battle, the sixteen members fought to the death to ensure their superiors’ escape, perishing in the confrontation.
Kenren is the previous incarnation of Sha Gojyo, sharing physical traits like short spiky hair and similar stature. He harbored fascination with the lower world’s culture and art, collecting contraband items such as cigarettes. His appearance included a distinctive forehead mark denoting high-born celestial lineage. In combat, he utilized firearms and engaged in activities like fishing—defying Heaven’s prohibitions against killing.
