Description
Jun Tendou is a shy modern middle school student abruptly wrenched 1,200 years into Japan's Heian past, thrust into a brutal conflict between humans and supernatural Oni.
His significant lineage marks him: a descendant of the Magatama clan, identified by a distinctive birthmark on his left shoulder. This signifies his unique destiny as the sole individual capable of awakening and controlling Orochi, the powerful eight-headed dragon. His personal history is shaped by his father's death, a sacrifice at a railway crossing saving a child.
Hailed as a savior upon arrival, Jun is treated like royalty by the monk Gen'un and warrior Raiko Minamoto, deepening his confusion and reluctance about this responsibility. Targeted by Oni forces, he struggles to comprehend the war's origins.
A pivotal moment occurs during a critical battle where Raiko faces overwhelming danger. Jun's raw emotional outcry inadvertently awakens Orochi, forging an unbreakable bond. The dragon becomes an extension of Jun's will, acting as both protector and weapon.
Jun's perspective transforms through encounters with Mizuha, an Oni leader. He discovers the Oni are displaced people using masks to manifest power, seeking to reclaim a homeland taken by human nobles. This revelation forces him to question the conflict's morality, recognizing valid grievances on both sides. He rejects Mizuha's demand for immediate allegiance, seeking a middle path to avoid further bloodshed.
A turning point arrives with the discovery of Gen'un's true motives. Jun witnesses the monk's betrayal: assassinating a temple councillor and transforming Raiko into a mind-controlled entity, confirming Gen'un's ruthless pursuit of godlike power. Faced with this corruption, Jun commits fully to stopping him.
In the final confrontation, Mizuha grants Jun two items: a gem containing his latent power and a dagger linked to Raiko's past. These merge into a sword. Jun wields this weapon against Gen'un, who has fused the Four Heavenly Kings into a monstrous form. To end the conflict without further death, Jun channels his full power, causing Orochi to assume its ultimate form: Yamata no Orochi. This entity defeats Gen'un through immense hydrokinetic force.
After the battle, Jun returns to his original timeline. He retains his school uniform but carries himself with newfound confidence and resolve, embodying the lasting personal growth from his journey from hesitant adolescent to an individual capable of decisive action grounded in empathy and conviction.
