Description
Daniel Kuso, often called Dan, is the main human protagonist of the Bakugan Battle Brawlers series. In the season Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia, Dan is 14 or 15 years old and lives in the fictional town of Wardington on Earth with his parents, Miyoko and Shinjiro Kuso. He is called to the Bakugan homeworld of New Vestroia by his partner, a Pyrus Dragonoid named Drago, to help free it from the invading Vestals, a race of humanoid aliens who suppress Bakugan consciousness and trap them in their ball forms.
In New Vestroia, Dan is a passionate and highly competitive brawler whose primary motivation is the protection of his friends and Bakugan. His defining traits include impulsiveness, overconfidence, and an eagerness for battle, which often leads him into trouble. He relies heavily on raw power and instinct, sometimes clashing with the more strategic members of his group. Despite these flaws, he possesses a strong sense of justice and an unyielding determination, particularly when it comes to rescuing Drago or defeating a powerful enemy. He is easily frustrated when forced to wait, but his loyalty to his allies is unwavering.
Dan serves as the central figure and the powerhouse of the Bakugan Brawlers Resistance, a small group fighting against the Vestal ruling council known as the Vexos. His role is to lead the charge in crucial battles, often using his relentless offensive style to overwhelm opponents. Initially, the Resistance members, such as Ace Grit, are skeptical of his skills, but Dan quickly proves his worth by fighting Ace to a draw, securing his place on the team. A core part of his journey in this season involves adapting to a new battle system that utilizes Life Gauges and Bakugan Traps, showcasing his ability to learn quickly in the heat of conflict.
The character's key relationships are central to the story. His bond with Drago is the series' most significant; Drago is not just a partner but an extension of Dan's spirit. A major plot point involves Dan losing Drago to the Vexos leader, Spectra Phantom, which triggers a deep personal crisis and a relentless quest to reunite with him. His relationship with Runo Misaki, a fellow brawler from Earth, is heavily hinted to be romantic, though it remains largely unspoken. They argue frequently but clearly care deeply for one another. In New Vestroia, he also forms a close bond with Mira Fermin, the Resistance leader. There are subtle hints of romantic tension here as well, with Mira showing jealousy regarding Runo and being notably relieved when Dan survives a dangerous explosion. Dan also forms a rivalry-turned-friendship with Ace Grit and a mentor-like relationship with the younger Vestal brawler Baron Leltoy, whom he helps to build confidence.
Dan undergoes significant development throughout New Vestroia. While he starts as a headstrong brawler, his devastating loss to Spectra forces him to confront his limitations and mature. His determination to get Drago back pays off, leading to a reunion that triggers Drago’s evolution into the more powerful Cross Dragonoid and later Helix Dragonoid. He learns to work within a team and to accept help from others, culminating in his role in the final assault to destroy King Zenoheld's doomsday weapon, the Alternative Weapon System, thereby saving both New Vestroia and Earth.
In terms of abilities, Dan is a formidable Pyrus brawler. His primary power comes from his strategic use of Ability Cards to enhance Drago's fire-based attacks. Unlike pure strategists, Dan excels at making split-second decisions and unleashing powerful combination moves. In New Vestroia, he masters the use of the new battle gauntlet and wields a Pyrus Trap Bakugan named Scorpion. His arsenal includes the use of Bakugan Traps like Spyderfencer and Grakas Hound, which he obtains from defeated opponents. One of his most notable achievements is helping Drago unlock the power of the Perfect Core, a legendary energy source, and later utilizing Battle Gear such as the Silver JetKor to counter the Vexos's most powerful machines.
