Alan Smithee operates as an agent for the Republic of Gillanba (also called Jiranba), a fictional nation under military suppression by a neighbor. He uses "Alan Smithee" as a pseudonym, referencing the film industry placeholder name for disowned projects. His primary mission is securing a rare mineral ore from the Kingdom of Vespania, possessing unique electromagnetic-disrupting properties crucial for developing advanced stealth military technology. Smithee believes acquiring this ore is essential to counter the military imbalance threatening his homeland, justifying extreme measures. To achieve this, Smithee allies with Luciano Carnevale (real name Salvatore Lucania), an Italian mafia figure using pop singer Emilio Baretti's concerts as cover for illicit activities. Smithee orchestrates a complex scheme to steal the "Cherry Sapphire," a gem crafted from Vespanian ore. He coerces Lupin III into participating by kidnapping Fujiko Mine and equipping her with an explosive collar, threatening her safety unless Lupin cooperates. An initial theft of a diamond by Lupin disguised as Kaito Kid serves as a test for the main heist. Smithee's plan culminates in a high-stakes exchange at Haneda Airport, where Carnevale intends to trade the stolen Vespanian ore for the Cherry Sapphire. Unbeknownst to Smithee, Lupin and his associates orchestrate the exchange as a ruse. Jigen and Goemon infiltrate by posing as middlemen—Kein Gejidasu and Eishin Wakagomo (an anagram of Goemon's name)—to facilitate the meeting. Smithee's heavily armed bodyguards provide security, equipped with FN Five-seveN pistols, Micro Tavor MTAR-21 rifles, and Uzis. When the exchange is disrupted, Smithee takes Conan Edogawa hostage to ensure his escape. Attempting to flee via cargo plane with Carnevale and the ore, Smithee faces pursuit from Lupin and Conan who board the aircraft. Carnevale intervenes chaotically, firing a handheld M134 minigun that damages the plane's controls and hull. This results in Smithee sustaining mortal wounds and the cabin suffering explosive decompression, ejecting Carnevale. Smithee succumbs to his injuries shortly after, ensuring the Vespanian ore is lost when the plane crashes into the sea. His actions are characterized by a single-minded, serious demeanor, prioritizing his mission above all else, including ethical boundaries.
