Alan Smithee utilizes a film industry pseudonym traditionally employed by directors disowning projects. His true identity links him to the Republic of Gillanba, a fictional nation embroiled in conflict with a neighboring state. Smithee's core mission is acquiring a rare mineral ore from the Kingdom of Vespania. This ore enables advanced stealth technology, which Smithee aims to weaponize to overcome Gillanba's military inferiority. He partners with Luciano Carnevale, alias of Italian mafia member Salvatore Lucania, who possesses stolen ore samples. To secure Lupin III's cooperation, Smithee kidnaps Fujiko Mine and fits her with an explosive collar, compelling Lupin to execute high-stakes thefts as capability tests. An initial diamond heist serves as a demonstration, while the true objective is the "Cherry Sapphire," later revealed to be composed of the Vespanian ore. During the exchange at Haneda Airport—where Carnevale delivers the ore and Smithee provides payment—Smithee arrives with heavily armed reinforcements. When Lupin's associates Jigen and Goemon, disguised as the broker and gem owner, activate their trap alongside Conan and police, Smithee exploits the chaos to take Conan hostage. He attempts escape via plane with Carnevale and the ore. Aboard the aircraft, Smithee confronts Lupin and Conan. Carnevale intervenes with a minigun, damaging cockpit controls and the hull, mortally wounding Smithee. Subsequent hull decompression fatally ejects Carnevale. Smithee succumbs to his injuries before the plane crashes. Military jets destroy the falling ore samples, achieving Vespania's goal of preventing its weaponization.
