Description
Dhepa, a non-Brahmin samanna monk, espouses a philosophy declaring human suffering inevitable and intrinsic to existence. He deliberately burns out one eye in radical ascetic practice, forging an alliance with the bandits Tatta and Migaila and embodying his devotion to intentional hardship. His path first crosses Siddhartha Gautama while the future Buddha endures his own ascetic struggles, leading to temporary joint travels. Despite this proximity, Dhepa fundamentally opposes Siddhartha’s emerging doctrines of enlightenment and suffering’s cessation, ultimately parting ways. Dhepa’s rejection escalates into active mockery of Buddha’s teachings and culminates in a direct assassination attempt against him, exposing profound ideological enmity. A pivotal reversal occurs when Buddha compassionately intervenes to save Dhepa’s life, compelling Dhepa to reconsider the truths he had ridiculed. This rescue, combined with later exposure to Buddha’s sermons, triggers Dhepa’s conversion: he renounces his former beliefs and embraces discipleship under Buddha. Baldness and a prominent scar from his lost eye persistently mark his physical appearance, reflecting both his ascetic past and transformative journey. Though initially defined by conflict with Buddha’s ideology, his later evolution sees full integration into Buddha’s community, epitomizing a transition from adversary to devotee through Buddhist redemption and personal change.
