Description
Hansuke Murai leads the Ryōi Shintō-ryū jujitsu school, standing as the chief rival to Shogoro Yano's judo school. An older, respected master, he embodies traditional jujitsu methods during the rise of judo in 1880s Japan, drawing fictionalized inspiration from the historical figure Hansuke Nakamura.

Murai maintains dignity and honor in all his dealings. His protective devotion to his daughter, Sayo Murai, deeply shapes his motivations, especially when he challenges Sanshiro Sugata. Sanshiro's developing affection for Sayo creates underlying tension, indirectly influencing Murai's path though he remains largely separate from their personal connection.

His narrative arc centers on preparing for a decisive martial arts tournament. He undertakes rigorous training, abstaining from alcohol to reach peak condition for his match against Sanshiro. Initially confident and landing effective throws, Murai gradually recognizes Sanshiro's superior skill during the bout. Sanshiro ultimately delivers multiple powerful throws, inflicting internal injuries that force Murai to concede defeat. Despite the physical toll and professional setback, Murai accepts the outcome gracefully, acknowledges Sanshiro's prowess, and later establishes a respectful bond with him.

After the tournament, Murai's role diminishes. His daughter Sayo and the jujitsu practitioner Gennosuke Higaki become central to Sanshiro's subsequent conflicts. Higaki's jealousy over Sanshiro's connection to Murai's family ultimately provokes the climactic duel, in which Murai plays no direct part. The character does not appear in *Sanshiro Sugata Part II*, and his portrayal is confined to the original film narrative.
