Description
Azaka Kokutou is the younger sister of Mikiya Kokutou. Separated from her family and adopted by her uncle at her own request, this move was a calculated strategy to let her familial ties fade from memory while she planned a future where she could pursue a romantic relationship with her brother. A profound childhood event—the death of someone very dear to both siblings—solidified her attraction to Mikiya's kindness, cementing her romantic feelings despite their blood relation.
She attended Reien Girl's Academy for high school, where she befriended fellow outsider Fujino Asagami and shared a room with Shizune Seo. Returning from the academy in her late teens, she discovered her brother dining with Shiki Ryougi and immediately viewed Shiki as a rival. This prompted her to become an apprentice to Touko Aozaki around June or July 1998. Her primary motivation for studying magecraft was to rival Shiki both physically and mentally, using it as a means to spite her.
In appearance, Azaka has long black hair and blue eyes, resembling her brother. Her school attire was the Reien uniform, and her casual wear often included a white shirt with a red tie, a brown waistcoat, and a matching skirt.
Outwardly a perfect model student, her true nature is predatory and determined, especially concerning her brother. She harbors a pure yet twisted love for Mikiya, describing herself as drawn to taboo subjects. This attraction extends to other men who physically resemble him, such as Satsuki Kurogiri. While generally friendly and social, her demeanor shifts possessively and competitively when her brother is involved.
Azaka possesses a natural ability for spontaneous combustion, a form of pyrokinesis closer to ESP than traditional magecraft, allowing her to cause targets to self-ignite. She comprehends magecraft and combat through music, using musical notes like Alto, Forte, and Mezzo Forte as incantations. Despite lacking Magic Circuits and innate talent as a magus, she can perform ignition spells due to this inborn power. To compensate for subpar spell-weaving, she uses a Mystic Code known as Salamander Skin Gloves, given by Touko. Her physical strength is considerable; Shiki Ryougi observed that Mikiya would be unable to resist if Azaka tried to force herself on him. Her Origin is identified as "Taboo."
Her involvement in various incidents is documented. In July 1998, she was misled by Fujino Asagami, who falsely claimed to admire an upperclassman while actually seeking to kill him. In September, she witnessed Kirie Fujou's suicide alongside Touko. In November, she attempted to demonstrate her magecraft to Mikiya and Shiki using one of Touko's pens, earning a reprimand from Touko about dependency on catalysts. She also directly questioned Shiki's gender, leading to a tense exchange.
A significant event occurred in January 1999, when Touko tasked her with investigating a magus controlling fairies at Reien Girl's Academy. This investigation into Kaoru Tachibana's suicide required collaboration with Shiki, whose Mystic Eyes were essential for seeing the fairies. During this, Azaka encountered Misaya Ouji and Satsuki Kurogiri. Using information from Mikiya and Shiki's walkman to resist Kurogiri's ability, she confronted Ouji, who was compelling students to commit suicide. Azaka used her magecraft to burn Ouji's fairies by detecting their heat and ultimately defeated Ouji with a physical attack. She later confronted Kurogiri about his motives but chose to leave him alone.
After resolving the Reien incident, she expressed her frustrations to Touko about Mikiya's relationship with Shiki, wishing he would cut ties with her. With Touko's subsequent departure from Mifune City, Azaka considered quitting magecraft studies since her primary motivation—rivaling Shiki—was gone. However, Touko indicated that if Azaka retained interest, homework would continue via mail, leaving open the possibility of her becoming Touko's head apprentice in the future.
In later appearances, such as in "recalled out summer- extra chorus," Azaka is shown interacting with Shiki and Mikiya's daily lives. In one segment, she drops by when Shiki is taking care of Mikiya's cat, showcasing her persistent feelings and ongoing dynamic with both characters.
