Description
Azaka Kokutō is the younger sister of Mikiya Kokutō. During a difficult event in her childhood, someone very dear to her and her brother died, and it was Mikiya's kindness during this time that sparked her romantic feelings for him. Because of this, she decided to live with her uncle to put distance between herself and her brother, hoping he would come to see her as a woman rather than a little sister. Her very Origin is "Taboo," which reflects her attraction to things that are forbidden. She later becomes a student at the prestigious Reien Girls' Academy, where she befriends Fujino Asagami and becomes roommates with Shizune Seo.

On the surface, Azaka presents herself as the perfect model student. She is clever, diligent, and maintains the dignified air of a proper young lady, consistently earning top grades in her class and ranking highly in national mock exams. However, beneath this composed exterior lies a very different true nature. She is actually quick to anger, hot-tempered, and can become impulsive and violent when things do not go her way, with her temper being compared to that of a wounded bear. She is a determined and prideful individual who dislikes losing, and her love for her brother, while pure, is also deeply obsessive and a little twisted. She is often described as a wolf in sheep's clothing. Despite her rivalry, she actually gets along well with Shiki Ryougi, though neither is willing to admit it.

Azaka's primary motivation throughout the story is her unrequited love for her brother, Mikiya, whom she considers her property. When she returns to Mifune City in her late teens, she discovers that Mikiya has become close to Shiki Ryougi. Seeing Shiki as the woman who stole her brother away, Azaka becomes fiercely determined to compete with her. To this end, she becomes an apprentice to the powerful mage Touko Aozaki, not out of a genuine desire to study magic, but as a way to gain the power to rival Shiki both physically and mentally.

In the story, Azaka often finds herself involved in supernatural investigations alongside Shiki and Mikiya. She plays a central role in the Reien Academy incident, where she partners with Shiki to investigate a series of mysterious memory-altering events and suicides at her school. She confronts the magus Satsuki Kurogiri and the student Misaya Ouji, ultimately using her fire abilities to defeat Ouji and save the students. In the Extra Chorus side story, which is set in late December 1998, she is shown trying to make plans with her brother for the New Year. When he refuses, she becomes furious and decides to spend the holiday with her classmates instead.

Her key relationships are central to her character. Her relationship with her brother Mikiya is one of devoted, unrequited love. She tries to play the role of the "good little sister" around him, hiding the full extent of her true feelings. In contrast, her relationship with Shiki Ryougi is one of rivalry. She is openly hostile and aggressive towards Shiki, whom she blames for stealing her brother's attention. However, this rivalry masks a grudging mutual respect and affection, as they work together effectively when the situation demands it. Her relationship with Touko Aozaki is that of a master and apprentice. Touko teaches her magic, provides her with tools like the Salamander Skin Gloves, and often sends her on missions, though she is fully aware of Azaka's romantic motivations.

Over the course of her story, particularly after the events at Reien Academy, Azaka undergoes significant development. She is forced to confront the impractical and forbidden nature of her love for her brother, coming to a realization that her feelings will never be truly accepted or reciprocated. Following Touko's departure from the city and Mikiya's marriage to Shiki, Azaka considers giving up on learning magic altogether, as her primary motivation for it is gone. She shows a capacity for personal maturity, demonstrating resilience and a strong sense of duty even as she learns to cope with her unfulfilled feelings.

Azaka possesses a unique and notable set of abilities. While she has no Magic Circuits, she has a natural, inborn talent for spontaneous combustion, which is classified as an ESP-like pyrokinesis rather than traditional magecraft. Because her spell-weaving skills are not yet fully developed, she uses a Mystic Code given to her by Touko called the Salamander Skin Gloves to strengthen and better control her ignition powers. When fighting, she uses musical notations like Alto, Forte, and Mezzo Forte to shorten her incantations. Her ability does not shoot fire at a target but rather causes the target itself to spontaneously ignite. Her physical strength is also notable, as Shiki once commented that Mikiya would be unable to resist if Azaka ever tried to force herself on him.
