Description
Coco, also known in his human guise as Kokoda Koji, is a central figure in the Yes! Precure 5 series and its sequel, including the film Kagami no Kuni no Miracle Daibōken!. He is a resident of the Palmier Kingdom, where he holds the title of prince and is a candidate for the throne alongside his best friend, Nuts. His home world was invaded and destroyed by the antagonist group Nightmare, forcing him to flee to the human world on a critical mission. This mission is to locate the Dream Collet and gather the fifty-five Pinkies, which are necessary to restore his fallen kingdom and rescue its citizens, including Nuts, who was trapped within the Dream Collet itself.
In his natural state, Coco is a small, cream-colored creature with features resembling a fox or a tanuki. He has beige fur, a distinctive salmon-red tuft on his head, triangular ears, and large blue eyes outlined with black lashes. His speech pattern is notable for ending sentences with his unique verbal tic, saying "~coco". To operate secretly within the human world and stay close to the Precure team, Coco has the remarkable ability to assume a human form. This human identity, Kokoda Koji, appears as a tall, handsome young man with short brown hair, typically dressed in a white shirt, blue trousers, and a blue vest. He uses this persona to work as a teacher of Japanese language and geography at the L'École des Cinq Lumières academy, the same school attended by the lead Cure, Yumehara Nozomi. Maintaining this human form requires significant energy, and any physical shock, such as a fall or injury, will cause him to instantly revert to his smaller, fairy-like shape.
Coco's personality is a blend of maturity and spirited energy. In his human teacher form, he is typically calm, wise, and exhibits a responsible nature. However, in his fairy form, he is much more expressive, energetic, and prone to acting on his curiosity. He is fundamentally kind, caring, and deeply trustworthy, sometimes to a fault, as he is very willing to reveal his secret identity to protect others. Despite his princely status, he has a history of being a free spirit, preferring exploration and adventure over being confined within the royal palace. He has a famous fondness for cream puffs, which began when a hungry Coco was given one by Nozomi, and these quickly became his favorite food. He is also known to be very light-weighted with alcohol, becoming intoxicated after just a single sip.
Driven by a powerful sense of duty and a desire to rectify the destruction of his kingdom, Coco acts as both a guide and a mentor to the five Precure warriors. His main role is to support them in their battles against Nightmare and later the Eternal organization, using his unique ability to sense the presence of enemies and the Pinkies they need to collect. As the series progresses, his relationship with Nozomi, Cure Dream, deepens considerably from that of an ally and teacher to a profound romantic bond. Though he initially hesitates due to the knowledge that he will eventually have to return to his own world, his feelings become more apparent, and this connection becomes a central emotional pillar of his character development. His friendship with Nuts is another key relationship; they are fellow princes and best friends, but their bond is tested after Nuts is freed, as Nuts initially struggles with guilt and trust issues following the kingdom's fall.
Regarding his role in the film Kagami no Kuni no Miracle Daibōken!, the narrative places Coco in a perilous situation. He is captured by the villains within the Mirror Kingdom, the primary setting of the movie, and is imprisoned alongside his friend Nuts. This capture serves as a critical motivator for the Precure team, as their quest in the film becomes not only about confronting the new enemy but also about rescuing the two princes from their imprisonment. This event underscores his role as a character who, despite his wisdom and support abilities, often requires the protection of the Precure when facing direct combat threats.
In terms of notable abilities, Coco's primary powers are his transformation into his human identity and his extrasensory perception, which allows him to detect threats and the magical Pinkies. While he possesses low direct combat ability, he becomes more powerful in the sequel series Yes! Precure 5 GoGo!. After being officially crowned king, he gains the ability to use the royal Palmier crown to bestow the Cure Fleurets upon the Cures, enhancing their transformation and fighting capabilities. His character development sees him grow from a refugee prince burdened by guilt into a confident and capable king who successfully balances his duties to his kingdom with his personal devotion to Nozomi, whom he eventually resolves to stay with.
