Marco Polo, born into a Venetian merchant family, joins his established trader father, Nicolò Polo, and uncle, Matteo Polo, on an expedition eastward at age seventeen. This mission aims to deliver sacred oil from the Tomb of Christ and a papal letter to Kublai Khan of the Yuan dynasty.

Departing Venice, Marco embarks on an arduous overland journey across Asia with his father and uncle. This transformative journey shapes him from an inexperienced youth into a capable merchant and observant traveler, adept at navigating unfamiliar societies, political dynamics, and physical dangers.

His travels serve as a formative education, exposing him to a wide array of peoples, rulers, and traditions. Encounters with figures like Princess Kokachin, individuals identified as mentors or authorities like Sheriff, and historical figures such as Abaqa Khan contribute significantly to his understanding of complex Silk Road societies, situating his experiences within documented events.

Marco's development emphasizes adaptation and perseverance. He learns to process cultural differences, negotiate unfamiliar territories, and steadily gains confidence as an explorer and trader. The journey culminates in his arrival at the court of Kublai Khan, fulfilling the family mission.
