Description
Rau Le Creuset is a clone derived from Atlantic Federation politician Al Da Flaga, created to be a superior heir but discarded due to accelerated aging stemming from shortened telomeres. This condition required regular medication and caused visible aging despite his chronological age of twenty-five. Consumed by rage and rejection after abandonment, Rau burned down the Flaga family mansion, killing Al Da Flaga and Mu La Flaga's parents. He then adopted the identity "Rau Le Creuset" (meaning "The Crucible") and concealed his aged appearance with a distinctive white mask.
He journeyed to PLANT, infiltrated ZAFT by posing as a Coordinator, and rose through its ranks due to exceptional tactical acumen and spatial awareness—a trait shared with his genetic relative, Mu La Flaga. This earned him the trust of figures like Patrick Zala. Rau cultivated a connection with geneticist Gilbert Durandal, who supplied his medication and later mentored Rey Za Burrel, another Al Da Flaga clone. Despite his ZAFT position, Rau held no faction loyalty. His core belief was nihilistic omnicidal misanthropy; he viewed all humanity—both Coordinators and Naturals—as inherently corrupt due to selfishness and genetic hubris. Rau believed his own existence, a product of forbidden cloning, epitomized humanity's arrogance and granted him the sole right to eradicate it.
Commanding the Le Creuset Team aboard the *Vesalius* during the First Alliance-PLANT War, Rau orchestrated the attack on the neutral Heliopolis colony to steal Earth Alliance prototype Gundams, successfully acquiring four units. This operation triggered the colony's destruction and the deaths of several ZAFT pilots under his command. Throughout the conflict, he manipulated both sides: leaking ZAFT's Operation Spitbreak plans to Blue Cosmos leader Muruta Azrael to ensure activation of the Cyclops System and escalating mutual hatred. He also deliberately allowed Flay Allster to escape with data enabling nuclear weapons bypass, knowing Azrael would use it. His actions aimed to provoke total annihilation between Coordinators and Naturals.
Rau piloted mobile suits including the ZGMF-515 CGUE and later the ZGMF-X13A Providence Gundam. The Providence's DRAGOON system leveraged his spatial awareness, enabling him to dominate battles, notably overwhelming Kira Yamato's Freedom Gundam until Kira's intervention. His final battle occurred at the Second Battle of Jachin Due, confronting Kira and Mu La Flaga. After disabling Mu's mobile suit, Rau engaged Kira while proclaiming his philosophy that humanity's extinction was inevitable and just. The Providence was destroyed by the Freedom, and Rau perished with a smile, believing his goal achieved.
His legacy persisted through Rey Za Burrel, a younger clone with identical genetic makeup who served Gilbert Durandal in the Second Alliance-PLANT War. Rey occasionally experienced Rau's memories and ideological influence. Rau Le Creuset's character arc concluded definitively in *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED*.
