Description
Analyzer Unit 09, formally designated R-9 Autonomous Type Shipborne Analysis Unit or AU-09, is an advanced robot assigned to the battleship Yamato. It is a uniquely modified and enhanced version of the standard AU-08 robot type, featuring a compact design with a hemispherical head, two arms, short legs ending in multi-wheeled feet, and small thrusters for zero-gravity maneuverability. It handles heavy labor, environmental analysis, sensor monitoring, computer operations support, and combat functions augmented by an exoskeleton. A high-powered laser is built into its left index finger, while other fingertips extend on cables for object manipulation and direct computer access. Built-in sensors enable chemical composition analysis, temperature and life sign readings, decay rate assessment in non-biological materials, and potentially radiocarbon dating.

Analyzer's artificial intelligence operates on a highly advanced quantum computer cluster system, resulting in an independent, naturally emergent personality without artificial programming. This personality expresses eagerness to serve and displays human emotions verbally and through body language despite a robotic monotone voice. The robot frequently collaborates with Lieutenant Kaoru Niimi, sharing an easy rapport, and gradually forms a friendship with Dr. Sakezo Sado, who is occasionally flustered by its literal worldview and interest in human affairs. Analyzer exhibits pride in its robotic abilities, considering them superior to biological lifeforms.

During the voyage to Iscandar, Analyzer monitors computer operations and sensors from a dedicated cradle on the Yamato's bridge. It partners with chief science officer Shiro Sanada to study and repair a captured Gami-loid robot, nicknamed "Alter." Analyzer bonds with Alter, teaching it Japanese concepts and language, though later permanently disables it after it escapes confinement and attempts to sabotage the ship. This experience motivates Analyzer to contemplate its own existence and place in the universe. Its work on Alter provides foundational knowledge of the Garmillas language and software systems, enabling critical interventions. With Niimi, Analyzer accesses the control system of a drill missile embedded in Yamato, deactivates its explosives, and instructs it to extract itself. They also jointly develop and deploy a computer virus based on Alter's systems against invading Gami-loid soldiers.

Analyzer routinely conducts external missions, performing environmental scans and heavy labor. It joins a survey team exploring Beemela 4, operating within an exoskeleton to clear forest growth, fend off wildlife, and guide the team through ruins, locating an ancient wave motion energy core and Iscandarian memory storage device vital to Yamato's journey. Later, during a mission to Shambleau, Analyzer pilots the Ki-8 Stork airboat in the absence of human crew members.

During the voyage to Terezart and the war with Gatlantis, Analyzer cleanses the Yamato's engine room of mind-altering "space fireflies" using a mounted device. It joins an expedition to Zeumurian ruins, where reactivated ancient AIs temporarily take over its systems to communicate. In the Golem Assault Battle, Analyzer sustains critical damage from enemy fire. As its systems fail, it thanks Dr. Sado before shutting down permanently.

A new Analyzer unit with identical coloring is later assigned to the refitted Yamato. Dr. Sado refuses to accept this replacement, believing it attempts to imitate the original. Damaged components of the original Analyzer, retained by Sado, regain partial functionality during Operation DAD. These components broadcast a recall message to former Yamato crew members before falling silent again.

Analyzer's design and technical capabilities directly influenced the development of early 23rd-century AU13 command AIs, robots capable of assuming full control of Cosmo Navy warships without human intervention.
