Banshomaru Shinra, self-styled "greatest psychic of the century" and member of the Rising Sun Spiritual Union under Kirin Jodo, possesses a chubby build, black spiked hair, and a round face. He typically wears a brown long-sleeved turtleneck, light-colored trousers, and a large string of brown prayer beads around his neck, concealing his "psychic's manual" under his shirt.
Confident in his psychic abilities, he approaches tasks diligently and seriously, striving to resolve spiritual issues through dedicated effort. His background includes elementary school vice-presidency of the sumo club and middle school membership in the table tennis club.
His documented activities commence in the Urban Legends Arc, investigating legends in Cuticle City. There, he encounters Reigen Arataka and Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama, sparking a business rivalry. While pursuing a flasher in a red raincoat, he confronts the Dragger spirit near a pond. Attempting to subdue it with his Spirit Bind technique—using prayer beads to entangle spirits—he fails against its social media-enhanced power. The spirit injures him, snapping his Achilles tendon, before Mob exorcises the Dragger.
In the Keiji Mogami Arc, hired with other psychics by Masashi Asagiri to exorcise his daughter Minori, Banshomaru attempts to restrain Mogami possessing her using Spirit Bind. Mogami overpowers him, leaving him incapacitated.
During the Separate Ways Arc, he appears on a television program discussing supernatural phenomena, asserting conventional psychic powers cannot defeat the video game spirit Player Killer—later disproven by Reigen. He also observes television appearances by Reigen and Jodo. He witnesses Toichiro Suzuki's broadcast in the World Domination Arc. In the REIGEN spin-off, he provides an amulet to Tome Kurata's teacher for protection against an evil spirit.
His psychic abilities center on the consistently ineffective Spirit Bind technique against powerful spirits like the Dragger and Mogami. Though claiming stamina, he tires easily, as shown pursuing the flasher. The spirit Dimple, after possessing him, noted his poor physical condition.
His name is a pun meaning "all of creation in its entirety"; the surname "Shinra" combines "forest" (森) and "lightweight fabric" (羅), while "Banshomaru" incorporates "all things, all creation" (万象) and "round, circle" (丸).
