Movie
Description
Foreman Spike debuted in the 1984 arcade game *Wrecking Crew* as the foreman at Mario and Luigi's demolition site. He antagonized the brothers by removing platforms and stealing resources mid-task. His sprite sported a beard, sunglasses, yellowish-brown clothing, and crooked teeth when hit. Designed by Hiroji Kiyotake (Wario's creator), Spike served as an early rival prototype for Mario, sharing physical and antagonistic traits later evolved in Wario.
He reappeared with a redesigned look—featuring a mustache, cleft chin, and red nose—in the Japan-exclusive *Wrecking Crew '98*. As the puzzle mode's fourth challenger, he worked for Bowser constructing hideouts. The narrative revealed Spike manipulated Bowser for personal gain, leading Bowser to chase him off after discovering the deception. This version bore a stronger resemblance to Wario.
Spike appeared sporadically later, often in background or cameo roles. He was an unlockable, overweight playable character in *Mobile Golf*, wearing his original beard and purple/yellow attire (colors later associated with Wario). His excavator vehicle resembled Waluigi's kart in *Mario Kart DS*. He also featured in *NES Remix* challenges, as a *Super Mario Maker* Mystery Mushroom costume, and in a *Wrecking Crew*-themed microgame in *WarioWare Gold*.
In *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, Spike was Mario and Luigi's former boss at Brooklyn's Wrecking Crew. He resented them for quitting to start their plumbing business. Physically larger than Mario, he wore a blue work uniform with the "Wrecking Crew" logo on his cap and sleeve, lacking his traditional beard and overalls. He mocked their commercial at a pizzeria, belittled their ambitions, and physically threatened Mario. Later, he nearly hit Mario with his van before fleeing from Bowser's emerging fortress. During Bowser's Brooklyn invasion, minions attacked Spike until an invincible Luigi rescued him. After the brothers defeated Bowser, Spike initiated cheers for them as the "Super Mario Brothers." A fictional testimonial on their plumbing website under "SpikeIsCool" reflected his initial bitterness over their departure, updating to a marginally improved rating after their heroism while retaining traces of his grudge.
