Description
Baron Ashura is a composite cyborg entity forged by Dr. Hell from the mummified remains of a man and woman involved in a forbidden relationship. Discovered, the couple was buried alive and mummified; a subsequent cave collapse crushed the man's right side and the woman's left side. Dr. Hell surgically merged these damaged remains into a single being.
This fusion grants Ashura a physically divided appearance: the left side presents male characteristics featuring darker skin, visible body hair, a semi-bushed eyebrow, and a dark eye. The right side displays female attributes with lighter skin, green eyeliner, and red lipstick. Ashura wears a purple robe covering the male half and a black robe over the female half.
Ashura serves as Dr. Hell's primary lieutenant, offering unwavering loyalty in exchange for granted life. The character typically employs the female voice when addressing Dr. Hell, conveying submissiveness, and uses the male voice to command subordinates like the Ashura Corps, asserting authority. Ashura wields the Bardos Wand, a device controlling Mechanical Beasts via emitted energy rays, though this control fails against entities possessing free will.
In the crossover film *Mazinger Z vs. Devilman*, Ashura accompanies Dr. Hell to the Himalayas after witnessing the demon Sirène's release. Dr. Hell forms an alliance with the Demon Tribe, freezing Ashura to aid their revival. Ashura participates in the joint offensive against the Photon Power Laboratory, leveraging both Mechanical Beasts and demons. Present during Devilman's capture and torture by demons aboard the Navalon flying fortress, Ashura retreats alongside Dr. Hell after Mazinger Z, equipped with the Jet Scrander, destroys the fortress.
Ashura's personality blends arrogance with strategic competence, frequently deploying destructive city-wide attack plans. However, overconfidence often leads to operational failures, incurring Dr. Hell's displeasure. A rivalry exists with Count Brocken, another lieutenant competing for Dr. Hell's favor. The name Baron Ashura derives from Hindu deities symbolizing perpetual battle and duality, reflecting the character's internal dual nature and external conflict against protagonists.
