Ayumi Sakagami is a junior high school student who appears shy and lonely after moving to Yokohama due to her father's job, struggling to connect with her new classmates. Her life changes when she discovers a small creature she names Fuu-chan, not knowing it is a fragment of the villain Fusion. She develops a protective and loving bond with him, blaming herself when his true nature emerges, yet resolves to communicate her true feelings to aid both Fuu-chan and the Pretty Cure teams.
This resolve enables her transformation into Cure Echo, whose form features light blonde ankle-length hair, gold eyes, and a white dress adorned with pink and green accents. The design incorporates elements from multiple Pretty Cure teams, especially Smile and Suite, and displays the Smile emblem on her chest bow. Her primary attack, Heartful Echo, creates a spiral line to launch a shining energy ball that purifies targets.
She evolves from shyness to bravery and happiness, growing confident in social interactions and sustaining friendships with the Pretty Cures. In later appearances, she gains fairy partners named EnEn and Gureru, who help restore her transformation abilities. She keeps the white Cure Decor from her initial transformation, wearing it on her coat pocket.
Her name, Sakagami Ayumi, combines "uphill" and "walking," symbolizing her gradual overcoming of personal challenges.
She appears in several Pretty Cure All Stars films, including New Stage, New Stage 3, Haru no Carnival, and Minna de Utau♪ Kiseki no Mahou!, often in supporting roles where she aids other Cures or makes brief cameos. In HUGtto! Pretty Cure, she lends her power to support the main team during an attack.
Her relationships center on her bond with Fuu-chan, whom she forgives and reconciles with after his sacrifice, and her fairy partners EnEn and Gureru. She also has an unnamed mother who appears briefly in the films.
