Description
Momoko Koigakubo, a sixth-grade student, stands approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall with fair skin, brown eyes, and distinctive lavender hair. Her hair is typically styled in a ponytail secured by a large pastel pink bow, complemented by long curtain bangs. She wears a sailor-themed school uniform: a white long-sleeved shirt with a blue collar and a yellow bow, a grayish skirt with white trim, blue knee-high socks, and brown loafers.

As a central member of the group confronting supernatural threats in her town, the original Japanese version portrays Momoko with a fearless, independent, and tranquil demeanor. She is intelligent and reliable, remaining unfazed during supernatural encounters and often devising plans to assist her friends in ghostly confrontations. She displays a nurturing, almost motherly affection toward Keiichirou Miyanoshita, comforting him when frightened and showing protective instincts. Momoko expresses no interest in romantic relationships and occasionally reveals personal insecurities, such as dissatisfaction with her weight, confiding a wish to lose weight to a stairway ghost. Subtle details, like her early ownership of a cellphone and her parents' refined appearance, suggest a privileged background.

The English dub significantly alters her characterization, reimagining Momoko as a fundamentalist evangelical Christian. She frequently invokes God, Jesus, and biblical doctrine, includes disparaging remarks about Jews, Muslims, and homosexuals in her dialogue, and labels her friends "heathens" while remaining outwardly polite to them. This version introduces a dark backstory, revealing she was formerly drug-addicted and sexually promiscuous before reforming through a Christian rehabilitation program where she met Satsuki’s mother.

Momoko first appears when the group investigates an abandoned school building to retrieve her wind-blown cap, inadvertently startling them before joining their efforts to confront Amanojaku. Her fearlessness proves critical; she remains unaffected by Babasare, a spirit visible only to frightened children, allowing her to aid others unhindered. She shares a unique psychic connection with Kayako Miyanoshita (Satsuki’s deceased mother), who periodically possesses Momoko’s body to communicate with or assist the group, notably during encounters with the Piano Ghost (Elise) and Kutabe. During one possession, Kayako directly apologizes to Momoko for this intrusion.

A pivotal episode focuses on Momoko’s possession by the ghost Mrs. Shizuko after a photograph taken at a haunted railway shows spectral hands gripping her. As the haunting intensifies, physical hand marks manifest on her neck and shoulders, causing severe illness. Mrs. Shizuko fully possesses her, compelling her to walk into an oncoming train, though the group intervenes to save her and exorcise the spirit.

Momoko’s story concludes with her graduation from Amanogawa Elementary School, departing for middle school after the group’s final victory over the ghosts.
