Description
Denzel, a child from Final Fantasy VII's Compilation, began life in Midgar's Sector 7 with his parents, Abel and Chloe. Abel worked for Shinra Electric Power Company, while Chloe managed their home. At age seven, during Final Fantasy VII, Abel received a promotion relocating the family to Sector 5. However, Shinra destroyed Sector 7's pillar to frame Avalanche, causing the plate's collapse. Abel tried to evacuate his family, but Chloe rushed to warn neighbors and never returned. Abel entrusted Denzel to an associate named Arkham before searching for Chloe; both parents perished.
After Sector 7's destruction, Denzel lived alone in the Sector 5 house meant for his family. Overcome by grief, he wandered and broke a window in Ruvie Tuesti's home. Learning of his loss, the elderly Ruvie allowed him to stay. They lived peacefully until Meteor threatened the planet. During Meteorfall, Ruvie shielded Denzel from the Lifestream, sacrificing herself and contracting Geostigma early. Denzel buried her with help from a man named Gaskin.
Following Ruvie's death, Denzel joined other orphans in Midgar's ruins, forming the "Sector Seven Scavengers" to trade scrap metal for food. Reduced income from reconstruction led the group to disband. Denzel eventually became isolated after offending his last companion, Rix. Searching for food near Aerith's church in Sector 5, he discovered Cloud Strife's motorbike, Fenrir, and called 7th Heaven using Cloud's phone. Collapsing from a Geostigma attack, Cloud found him and took him to 7th Heaven in Edge. Cloud and Tifa Lockhart, feeling responsible for Sector 7's destruction, adopted him. Marlene, Barret Wallace's adopted daughter, welcomed him as a brother.
In Edge, Denzel helped at 7th Heaven and idolized Cloud, eagerly listening to his travel stories. He hid his worsening Geostigma symptoms until Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo promised a cure. They abducted him and other infected children to the Forgotten City, where tainted water accelerated their Geostigma and allowed mental control by Jenova's will. During Bahamut SIN's attack on Edge, witnessing Tifa injured while protecting him allowed Denzel to break free. He impulsively charged at Bahamut but was stopped by Barret. Cloud later cured Denzel's Geostigma using Lifestream-infused water from Aerith's church, as he had missed the healing rain.
During the Deepground crisis the following year, Cloud and Tifa relocated Denzel and Marlene to safety. Afterward, seeking to repay those who helped him, Denzel applied to join Reeve Tuesti's World Regenesis Organization. At an interview in Johnny's café, Reeve declined due to Denzel's age but revealed he was Ruvie's son, showing Denzel a matching handkerchief. Johnny objected to the recruitment, prompting Denzel to explain he wanted Cloud's strength. Johnny misinterpreted this as romantic prowess, which Denzel denied. Later, Denzel visited the site of Zack Fair's death with Cloud, placing flowers where yellow blooms grew.
