Description
The character "Uomo di latta" (Tin Woodman) originates from L. Frank Baum's literary work and appears in anime adaptations of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". Originally a human woodsman named Nick Chopper in Oz's forests, he loved Nimmie Amee, a servant of the Wicked Witch of the East. To prevent their marriage, the witch enchanted his axe, causing it to sever his limbs one by one. Each lost limb was replaced with tin by a local tinsmith, continuing until his entire body became tin, transforming him into the Tin Woodman.

His primary motivation is obtaining a heart from the Wizard of Oz, believing it will restore his ability to love and feel emotions. Despite this perceived lack, he consistently displays compassion, kindness, and concern for others, grieving when accidentally crushing an insect and refusing harm to butterflies for magic, indicating inherent emotional capacity.

Joining Dorothy Gale's journey to the Emerald City, his tin body proves practically useful: his axe chops wood for bridges or rafts and beheads threatening creatures to defend the group. However, he faces recurring vulnerability to rust from rain, tears, or moisture, immobilizing him until oiled. The Witch of the West's Winged Monkeys once severely damaged his body by throwing him from a height, requiring repairs by Winkie tinsmiths after her defeat.

The Wizard provides him with a placebo heart made of silk and sawdust, which satisfies him, though his actions consistently demonstrate pre-existing tenderness and empathy. After Dorothy departs Oz, he rules the Winkie Country, commissioning a palace constructed entirely of tin, including architectural details and garden flora, reflecting his metallic nature.

In later series developments, he mitigates rust vulnerability by having himself nickel-plated. He actively participates in Oz's defense, commanding Princess Ozma's army in "Ozma of Oz" and serving as defense counsel in a trial during "Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz". His story expands significantly in "The Tin Woodman of Oz", where he searches for Nimmie Amee. He discovers she married Chopfyt, a man constructed partly from his own discarded human limbs, an unsettling encounter compounded by experiences of temporary transformation into a tin owl and meeting another tin man named Captain Fyter.

His characterization consistently emphasizes the contrast between his belief in lacking emotion and his frequent demonstrations of sensitivity, creating philosophical discussions with the Scarecrow about brains versus hearts. Despite his metallic form, he remains one of Dorothy's most emotionally expressive companions.
