Description
Masaki Sato is a first-year high school student characterized by a strong resistance to receiving help, fueled by pride and a desire for independence. This resistance causes her initial hostility towards Shun Matsuoka when he assists her after an injury; she bullies him for days to discourage his kindness. Her feelings shift, developing into a romantic interest in Shun. Consequently, she becomes noticeably warmer and more receptive exclusively towards him, while maintaining distance or sharpness with others. Her interactions with Shun feature shyness and efforts to present herself favorably, contrasting her typically fiery demeanor.
Physically, Masaki stands at 146 cm (4'9"), making her the smallest in her social group. She has brown hair with a distinctive fluffy texture. This texture prompts Chizuru Tachibana to nickname her "Mary" due to its resemblance to sheep's wool. Though she eventually tolerates this nickname and related teasing about her hair as she grows closer to the group, she remains sensitive about jokes concerning her physical development, especially comments about her flat chest.
Her personality blends a quick temper and initial defensiveness with underlying kindness and thoughtfulness. She struggles to express gratitude openly, but her capacity for warmth surfaces over time, particularly within Shun's circle of friends. She participates in group activities primarily to engage with Shun, though her guarded nature emerges when others like Chizuru attempt interaction. Chizuru's own romantic interest in Masaki goes unnoticed, as Masaki's focus remains fixed on Shun.
Masaki evolves from isolated defensiveness towards a more integrated, albeit still selective, social presence. While retaining her core traits of pride and resistance to pity, she shows increased tolerance for light-hearted group teasing and deeper emotional openness. A notable moment revealing vulnerability occurs when she cries after a school play, exposing her underlying sensitivity to social challenges and embarrassment. Her journey reflects a gradual acceptance of companionship and support, even as her primary attachment remains directed toward Shun.
