Description
Mary Gowland owns and operates Wonderland's Amusement Park. His first name, "Mary," causes him significant embarrassment, leading him to insist on being called only "Gowland." This sensitivity originated when Blood Dupre publicly revealed his full name, creating intense and lasting enmity. Merely hearing Blood's name can trigger Gowland into violent rage.

Physically, Gowland has auburn hair usually worn in a braid and blue eyes. He typically wears brown pants, a white work shirt, a yellow vest, and a matching jacket decorated with light-blue diamond patterns plus music notes on the sleeves and front, secured by a brown belt featuring carved carousel horses.

Despite his volatile reaction concerning his name, Gowland generally displays a gentle and laid-back nature. He genuinely cares for friends, especially Julius Monrey, whom he often visits at the Clock Tower to encourage breaks. He maintains a complex friendship with Boris Airay, permitting the cat to live in the Amusement Park despite disapproving of Boris's habit of dripping blood. He also tolerates visits from Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, despite their ties to Blood Dupre.

A passionate music enthusiast, Gowland conceives high-quality compositions but possesses no musical talent. He is particularly terrible at playing instruments like the violin, delivering off-key performances often described as painful. Listeners frequently employ tricks or distractions to make him stop. He habitually carries a string instrument and insists on playing it, much to the dismay of those around him, including Alice Liddell, whom he attempted to serenade upon meeting.

Gowland's character derives from the Duchess in Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." He harbors an intense fear of haunted houses. He warmly welcomed Alice to the Amusement Park, giving her a season pass to encourage visits. While he develops a friendly rapport with her, his interactions lack the romantic overtones shown by other male characters.

His role expands in "Joker no Kuni no Alice," where he reappears after an absence in "Clover no Kuni no Alice." He actively intervened to rescue Alice within the Prison Realm, justifying his actions by stating Joker violated the rules first. He shot Joker with his rifle before escorting Alice to safety.

Gowland operates the Amusement Park territory, one of three major factions engaged in the Country of Hearts' civil war, alongside the Castle of Hearts and the Hatter Mafia. Boris Airay assists him in managing the Park.
