Rennyo, a Buddhist priest active in 15th century Japan's tumultuous Sengoku period, served as high priest of Honganji temple. He devoted his life to propagating the Jodo Shinshu teachings of monk Shinran, focusing on Shinran's wisdom concerning the fundamental question of human existence. Rennyo's interpretations offered answers about life's purpose, providing spiritual guidance to his followers. When Ryouken fell into deep despair following personal tragedy, Rennyo's preachings granted him clarity and direction, leading Ryouken to become his dedicated apprentice. The growing influence of Rennyo's teachings and the expanding Honganji congregation drew hostility from rival Kyoto Buddhist sects. This opposition escalated into persecution, forcing Rennyo to flee the capital with Ryouken. They journeyed north to the Hokuriku region seeking refuge and a new base for missionary work. Settling in Yoshizaki, present-day Fukui Prefecture, Rennyo persisted in sharing the Buddhist message despite displacement and continued conflict with antagonistic groups. His journey and struggles highlight his role as a religious leader disseminating teachings on life's meaning and human existence against a backdrop of historical upheaval.
