Description
Katrielle "Kat" Layton, adopted daughter of renowned archaeologist and puzzle-solver Professor Hershel Layton, was entrusted to Luke Triton by her birth mother Kamilla Azan during a shipwreck. Luke delivered her to the Professor, who raised her as his own. At age ten, she bid farewell to her father and Luke as they departed to investigate the Hidden Relics, a quest from which they never returned.

Eleven years later, Katrielle founded the Layton Detective Agency in London under the slogan "any mystery solved," driven primarily by her mission to locate her vanished father. She operates alongside assistant Ernest Greeves—later revealed as Miles Richmond, grandson of millionaire Maximilian Richmond—and a talking dog named Sherl O.C. Kholmes, whose speech only she and Ernest comprehend. Sherl’s amnesia fuels Katrielle’s parallel quest to uncover his true identity.

Katrielle exhibits an eccentric, humorous personality, solving puzzles through her self-proclaimed "miraculous instinct"—logical yet intuitive leaps occasionally dismissed by Sherl as luck. She favors imaginative explanations, insisting "the truth is always stranger than fiction," and remains unflappable in bizarre scenarios like conversing with a talking dog. Her occasional quick temper surfaces more frequently in the anime adaptation. A love for food, especially sweets, often shapes her investigative analogies and decisions.

Her partnership with Ernest originated when she disproved Inspector Hastings’ unfounded accusation that he stole Gressenheller University research papers. Disgusted by the lack of evidence, she cleared Ernest’s name, prompting him to join her as an unpaid assistant prior to the agency’s launch.

Throughout twelve London cases—spanning missing cats, lost film reels, and a conspiracy involving the city’s wealthiest elite, the "Seven Dragons"—Katrielle unraveled Ernest’s true identity and his misguided revenge plot against the Dragons, whom he blamed for his family’s ruin. After resolving the conflict, Ernest chose to remain her assistant. The game concluded with Katrielle renewing her vow to find her father and solve Sherl’s mystery, having decoded her father’s parting puzzle: "If you’re not my real daughter, then who are you?"

Her search intensified when family acquaintance Rosa provided details about Layton and Luke’s Relics investigation. Katrielle deduced the Relics—a cryogenic sleep device—were concealed in Cranscoll Cathedral. Confronting the device’s guardian priest, she exposed how its energy polluted the environment and orchestrated his arrest with Inspector Britannias. This led to discovering Layton and Luke in cryogenic sleep, whom she freed with aid from Luke’s wife, Marina Triton.

In the anime, Katrielle continues solving cases through her agency, sustaining her partnerships with Ernest and Sherl while pursuing answers about her father’s disappearance and Sherl’s origins.
