Description
Virgil guides the protagonist through Hell's circles. He is the spirit of the ancient Roman poet Publius Vergilius Maro, dwelling in Limbo among virtuous pagans because he lived before Christ's birth. His presence in Hell results from being unbaptized despite his morally upright life.

Beatrice summoned Virgil to aid Dante after seeing Dante lose his way. Virgil accepted this task under Beatrice's promise to praise him to God. His primary function throughout the journey is explanatory and protective; he offers detailed insights into each circle's structure, punishments, and moral frameworks. He provides Dante with his first magical ability upon their meeting.

Virgil maintains a measured, resolute, and wise demeanor, embodying human reason. He repeatedly intervenes to shield Dante from hostile entities like demons and monsters. His inability to overcome certain obstacles alone, such as the gates of Dis, signifies reason's limitations without faith. He demonstrates impatience when Dante shows moral hesitation or excessive sympathy for sinners.

Visually, his depiction varies across animations, but commonly features a bald appearance. Some artistic interpretations show him with exaggerated physical traits like an elongated neck or notably stylized hair. He wears classical Roman attire fitting his historical origin.

His narrative arc concludes at Purgatory's boundary; his status as a pagan spirit bars him from realms beyond Hell, ending his role as guide. He departs after ensuring Dante transitions toward Beatrice for the next journey stage.
