Description
Choichiro Hikari, designated Scotty Harrison in the English dub, operates as a key member of the Earth Defense Army's Scientific Defense Guard (Science Guard Party). His service began at Space Satellite EGG3, where he performed an unacknowledged act of heroism prior to his main assignment: neutralizing a caterpillar-state Goglan attacking the station's generator while suffering severe oxygen depletion. This selfless act drew the notice of Ultraman Joneus, an Ultra Warrior from Planet U40 monitoring Earth's solar system.
En route to join the Scientific Defense Guard on Earth, Hikari encountered Joneus in space. The Ultra Warrior revealed Earth faced grave danger and proposed merging with a human host to combat the threat effectively. Hikari consented, forging a symbiotic bond. He retained his human form normally but could transform into the 40-meter-tall Ultraman Joneus during crises using the Beam Flasher device. Maintaining this connection required Hikari to undergo rigorous physical training to synchronize with Joneus's powers.
This dual existence created operational friction within the Scientific Defense Guard. Teammates, especially Kei Marume, grew suspicious of Hikari's frequent, unexplained absences coinciding with Joneus's appearances during monster attacks. A pivotal moment occurred when both Hikari and Joneus perished battling the Devil Spirit. Transported to Planet U40 for revival, Hikari learned of the planet and its link to Earth. U40 authorities later wiped his memories of their world to preserve its secrecy, though events involving Amia and the Heller Empire's invasion would eventually reverse this memory loss.
Hikari's actions consistently reflect themes of self-sacrifice and discretion. Romantic interactions with teammate Mutsumi Hoshikawa, alongside attention from Yuriko Nojima and Amia, add interpersonal layers. During the Heller Empire's full-scale invasion, the Scientific Defense Guard defied Earth Defense Army orders to ally with U40's resistance. In the climactic battle on Heller City, Hikari's identity was fully exposed to his teammates when they saw him transform as he fell from the enemy's main tower. After resolving the conflict and liberating U40, Hikari and his team returned to Earth, where he ultimately separated from Joneus.
