Description
Hiroaki Tobe is a key member of the elite Science Guard Party within the Earth Defense Army. Holding multiple doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering, aerospace mechanics, and electronic engineering, he spearheads the team's weapons development and technological advancement. His expertise drives the design, improvement, and modification of their equipment, most significantly the multipurpose aircraft Super Mardock, which he originally created for the Earth Defense Army before its assignment to the team.
Tobe exhibits a proactive nature combined with a consistently calm demeanor. He rarely engages in interpersonal clashes, preferring to demonstrate his convictions through deliberate action over debate. This composed attitude underpins his leadership, leading him to serve as acting captain during the transition between Captain Tetsuo Akiyama's reassignment and Daisuke Gondo's appointment.
His technical skills prove critical during missions. After the Super Mardock nearly succumbed to water pressure pursuing the Fire Badon, Tobe revamped the aircraft. Observing grape skin properties inspired a mechanism allowing the craft to eject its outer shell under pressure, mirroring pulp separating from skin. This modification became vital when the Super Mardock later became trapped in erupting lava during another Fire Badon encounter, enabling escape.
Tobe's analytical abilities extend beyond engineering. During the Heller Empire conflict, he grew suspicious of the link between teammate Choichiro Hikari and Ultraman Joneus. Collaborating with Kei Marume, he meticulously analyzed Hikari's action records against Joneus's appearances. Computer analysis indicated a 99.9999% probability they were the same being, a deduction made before the team's mission to Planet U40. Confronting Heller on U40, when the enemy threatened the Great Sage and demanded Ultraman's surrender, Tobe hoped Hikari would reveal himself. Witnessing the Great Sage's sacrifice, Tobe regretted over-reliance on comrades and Ultraman's power. He subsequently joined teammates in independent action against Heller's forces, resulting in their capture. After rescue and Joneus's victory, Tobe returned to Earth with the team.
His background includes prior service in the Earth Defense Army's New Weapon Development Department, where he designed the Super Mardock and researched other armaments. Captain Tetsuo Akiyama recommended his transfer to the Science Guard Party, driven by Tobe's documented interest in investigating Earth's peculiar phenomena. Throughout his tenure, he dedicated himself to continuous technological advancement and strategic planning against kaiju threats.
